The list of helpful folks in putting a book out on a tight deadline is too long to mention here. But I'll try.
Appreciation must go to the Chicago Cubs media relations department, whose cooperation and liberal access has always been a given, but never was more vital than in the conducting of interviews and gathering of information here. The media relations folks were under the gun due to the dual pressures of the home-run chase and the wild-card race, and they were helpful as usual. Further thanks must go to the Cubs' media-relations colleagues with the Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers for their assistance.
Once in the ballpark, the time taken by Cubs players, field personnel and front-office executives in talking about Sammy Sosa was crucial. I'm indebted to manager Jim Riggleman, team president Andy MacPhail and general manager Ed Lynch for taking blocks of time out of their heavy schedules for one-on-one interviews. And many, many thanks to hitting coach Jeff Pentland, who kept going back and forth to the visitors' dugout in Milwaukee County Stadium to try to find me. We found each other, all right, and Pentland's wisdom comprises an entire chapter here.
Another big assist goes to the numbers-crunchers at STATS, Inc. and Total Sports for providing the statistical insight about Sammy Sosa's clutch-hitting abilities, past and present. A bonus was thrown in by Total Sports' Stu Shea's constant encouragement and emergency computer assistance.
More help with the newfangled world of cyberspace was provided by the ladies of the household, Laura and Nina Castle, who clicked the mouse and keyboard when I suffered brain cramps and computer fright. They also should be praised for allowing me to mess up part of the house with notes, newspapers, magazines and whatever else I used in the production of this book.
We would not have brought you this book promptly after the 1998 season without the transcription help of Barbara
