To my wife, Nina Castle, with love for shouldering a tremendous
personal burden so I could help finish this book, and to my late
mother, Vera Castle, for always believing in me through the upheavals
of growing up.

To the real Cardinals and Cubs fans, and to their continued rivalry. May it always remain fun for both.

Acknowledgements
The authors pestered a lot of folks to help complete this book.
Leading off is sports director Luis Hernandez of WJNO-Radio in West Palm Beach, Florida, for assisting in interviews of Cardinals personalities in spring training. Next up is Jay Rand of the Cubs' publications department for digging out his master file of newspapers and magazines to glean historical information. The Cubs and Cardinals media relations departments also deserve credit for putting up with us, particularly the Cardinals' Steve Zesch.
Also coming out of the bullpen to help with some hard-to-find historical facts was Don Zminda, the publications maven of STATS, Inc. and one of the sharper analysts of baseball trends anywhere.
Cubs manager Jim Riggleman, with his Chicago-St. Louis resume, was gracious with his time in writing the foreword. So was a host of present and past Cubs and Cardinals players and executives to share views of the rivalry. We'll never forget Bob Tiemann, the pre-eminent baseball historian in St. Louis, whose familiarity with the box score of every major league game ever played was invaluable. And there's the helpful staffs at the University of Missouri-St. Louis library, the Harold Washington downtown library in Chicago, and the Skokie (Illinois) Public Library.
Much welcomed was the prose of the many sports writers for newspapers in both St. Louis and Chicago over the last century. Their work, produced under deadline pressure and preserved on microfilm, brought back to life many great Cardinals-Cubs games.
As usual, the folks at The Dreaming Dog Group in Indianapolis should get kudos for their work.
Finally, there's Laura Elizabeth Castle, high school freshman, who was always available to conduct classes in Computers 101 when the old man showed his technological obsolescence.

Foreword
I can bring an insider's perspective to the Cubs-Cardinals rivalry; so much of my professional life has been tied up with both franchises. You know me best now as the Cubs' manager since 1995, but I also worked for the Cardinals from 1976 to 1990 as a minor league player, minor league coach, minor league manager, director of player development, and first-base coach for the big-league club under Whitey Herzog. So I believe I have seen both ballclubs from almost all angles possible.
