Chapter One Who is that Guy?
When baseball fans talked about records that would never be broken, there always was one at the top of the list: Roger Maris' 61 home runs in the 1961 season.
The feeling was that no oneincluding Babe Ruth, Henry Aaron or Willie Mayshad hit that many in a season. How could anyone playing today ever do it?
Sure, Ken Griffey Jr. had come close. So had Mark McGwire. But getting close wasn't breaking

the record. That was a record that would stand forever.
However, as the 1998 baseball season went from April to May to June, a funny thing happened. Some fans began wondering if this was the year when Maris' record would be broken. Griffey was hitting his usual number of early-season homers and McGwire had picked up where he left off in the 1997 season.
As June turned into July, a third name was added to the list of possible record breakers: Sammy Sosa. "Sammy who?" some fans asked. "You must be kidding," other fans said.

Even though he was not known as a home run hitter, he showed everyone what kind of power he had with 40 home runs in the 1996 season. However, 40 home runs is a long way from Maris' 61.
When it first was suggested that Sammy could approach the record, he shrugged it off. He told reporters that McGwire was "The Man" and the one who would have a shot at "The Record." Even as the season turned from July to August to September and McGwire and Sosa were neck-and-neck in the home run race, there was Smilin' Sammy, telling everyone how happy he was to play baseball and cheering for McGwire to hit another long ball.
Suddenly, McGwire also began to cheer for Sosa. And the publicin Chicago, St. Louis, the Dominican Republic, and every place where there
