Introduction

E asy Italian Reader is the perfect book for those who want to delve into the world of Italian. The glossed words and personal presentation of the material will help facilitate the readers enjoyment of each of the three parts: Antonio e Christine, Fatti e figure della nostra storia, and Scrittori contemporanei. Each reading is followed by comprehension questions and activities. In addition, a Ripasso interspersed between groups of chapters in all three parts contains a summary of material covered up to that point along with other activities, including crossword puzzles, to help you practice the information given in the previous chapters.

Part One takes the reader on a journey with Christine, an American girl who has moved with her family to Rome, Italy. The language student will be able to identify with Christine as she learns about Italian culture and she learns to speak the language. Antonio, Christines Roman friend, accompanies her and helps her discover the beauty of his country and culture. With his help, Christine learns about Italian holidays and how her life in the United States is both similar to and different from her life in Italy.

Part Two offers a crash course in the rich history of Italy beginning in Ancient Rome with the story of Romulus, the legendary founder of the city, to Marco Polo, whose epic journeys to the Orient changed Italian history forever, to the present day with prominent figures such as Silvio Berlusconi.

Part Three adds a special flavor: literature. Three prominent twentieth-century writers are highlighted giving the reader insight into and knowledge of the inner workings of Italian society. First, a young girl fights against stereotypes by affirming her right to be free to make choices for herself in an excerpt from Lara Cardellas Volevo i Pantaloni. Next, the quintessential Italian author Alberto Moravia takes the reader on a trip through mid-twentieth-century Rome in his short story Le Luci di Roma. Finally, Vita, by Melania Mazzucco, traces the story of an Italian peasant girl who immigrates to New York in the early 1900s and the problems she faces adapting to her new surroundings. With glossed words and helpful activities, these works of literature will help the learner gain confidence in reading and comprehending authentic Italian texts.

Easy Italian Reader is a great tool for introducing Italian culture, history, and literature as well as providing useful questions and entertaining activities to guide the learners educational trip. What better way to learn Italian culture and language than by having fun?
