One of the meaningful benefits of the research process is the privilege of first contacting and then learning to know and appreciate many individuals. In researching the history, construction, and furnishings of Iowa's first state capitol and in restoring the building, I have worked with numerous people. Each of them has left an imprint on the final outcome of my work, this manuscript. I contacted so many between 1970 and 1988, and I regret that not all may be named here. Many will find their names included in the text in connection with their specific contributions, others will find themselves credited in the appendixes, and still others will know only that I am aware of what they didand that I am most appreciative.
The restoration of Old Capitol was initiated by Willard L. Boyd, president of the University of Iowa, in the summer of 1970. By appointing me director of research for the project, he involved me in a fascinating academic pursuit that resulted in a new career direction in the ensuing years.
