    Chapter 1

    Breed Overview

    About the Breed

T he Yorkshire Terrier is a small breed dog with a feisty and friendly nature. Although they can vary in size according to their breeding, they are considered to belong in the Toy breed category. Toy breeds are often referred to as lap dogs, and a widely held perception is that they are old ladies dogs; however, this label misrepresents their large personalities and fearless attitude. There is a lot more to a Yorkie than th e common stereotype.

Even within the same litter, there may be wide variation in the size of the Yorkshire Terrier, and the adult dog may range from 4 pounds to as much as 15 pounds. Especially small teacup-sized Yorkies have been unnaturally bred and may be predisposed to more health problems than the standard dog, which should be considered when making a purchasing decision.

    Looks

The Yorkshire Terrier in its natural state has a fine, long coat in two main colors that are usually referred to as Steel Blue and Tan, but may vary from silver to black and from honey beige to rich tan. The coat comes in two types. The silk coat, which hangs straight, will grow to the floor unless clipped, and will need to be tied back or trimmed away from the eyes, whereas, the wavy coat is shorter and scruffier. The Yorkie has no undercoat and little dander in the coat, which makes the breed suitable for allergy sufferers, but consequently the dog feels the cold and should not be kept outdoors in a cold climate. Their head is small and their muzzle is of medium length. There are two variations in the ears. Most Yorkies have pricked ears, but some may have ear flaps. The back is level and the tail is carried half-down, except when used expressively in greeting or to acknowledge anything exciting, when it may be held high an d wagged vigorously.

    Age Expectancy

The life expectancy of a Yorkshire Terrier is quite high at 1416 years, and this should certainly be considered if choosing a puppy. Although the Yorkshire Terrier copes well with indoor living and is an excellent companion, the exercise needs of the breed should not be underestimated, so the owner should think ahead to their own fitness in future years, and what arrangements they might put in place if they encounter mobility problems or if the dog should outlive them. Because of the breeds longevity and popularity with older people, Yorkshire Terriers may often be found in shelters or rehomed privately in later life, so homing an adult dog may be a better alternative than buying a puppy for some people. In these instances, the adult dog may come ready trained and with the calm temperament of seniority, or with baggage from a bad start, and careful consideration should be made as to the individual circumstance and whether the new owner is suited to the dogs needs.

    High N Yorkies

Yorkshire Terriers are surprisingly energetic and enthusiastic by nature, and their lively personalities should be appreciated, so a potential owner looking for a quiet life may wish to reconsider the choice of a Yorkshire Terrier. They can be quite vocal if they pick up on noises or activity outside the four walls of their home. While the Yorkie is in many ways suited to living in an apartment due to its size, consideration should be made to the thickness of the walls and the likelihood of disturbing other neighbors. It is always a sad outcome for a dog and its owner if rehoming becomes necessary due to nuisance behavior, which in many countries is l egally enforceable.

This being said with diligent training of a puppy or with prudent selection - photo 3

This being said, with diligent training of a puppy, or with prudent selection of a suitable rescue dog, a Yorkshire Terrier may be an excellent choice for those living in close proximity to other neighbors, especially as the breed is non-aggressive and unlikely to be seen as a threat.

Although the Yorkshire Terrier is friendly by nature, it may be reactive with children who do not respect its space or who pull its ears, coat, or tail. To avoid the possibility of the Yorkie snapping defensively in these instances, it is important that children are taught to be gentle with this sensitive breed, in which case there is every chance that a good relationship will blossom between child and dog. When each understand and trust the other, Yorkies are often known to help dog-phobic children to overcome their fears, as their size and appearance are ap pealing to children.
