John Akin and ElizabethBetsy McKinney were married on December 19, 1809, in LincolnCounty. Their marriage marked the beginning of a Kentucky familythat settled along Brush Creek in Green County in the early 1800sand grew to include hundreds of descendants. John and Betsy werethe parents of eight children. Their family grew to includeforty-two grandchildren, at least one hundred eightygreat-grandchildren, and an ever-increasing number ofdescendants.

The story of the Akin family fromcolonial times to the post-World War II era reflects the events ofAmerican history. Their story begins on the Eastern Seaboard andmoves westward. From the earliest settlers, the Akin family werefarmers. Johns father was a farmer in Pennsylvania, and then inNorth Carolina, before moving to Kentucky. After settling in GreenCounty, John and his sons continued to farm, as do many of hisdescendants today. The majority of the descendants still live inthe central Kentucky area, including the counties of Green, LaRue,Hardin, Hart, and Taylor.

However, some branches of the familymoved beyond the rolling hills of central Kentucky. In the 1880s,some left Kentucky and traveled west, settling in Missouri, Kansas,Texas, and Oklahoma. Another migration after World War I saw sometraveling to Nebraska and other western states where they farmed orpursued other occupations. During and after World War II, some leftthe rural life in pursuit of jobs in Louisville and cities farthernorth. Some retired in places farther south. The list of familyoccupations expanded to include the fields of education, industry, medicine, and technology.

Five generations of descendants arechronicled in this book. This family history is arranged in adescendant outline. Each child of John and Betsy is given a onedigit number to show his or her position in the family birth order. Each grandchild is given a two digit number. The first digit is thesame as the parents number. The second digit shows thegrandchilds position in the family birth order. Eachgreat-grandchild has a three digit number. Eachgreat-great-grandchild has a four digit number.

This descendant outline is presentedtwice in this book. Immediately following this introduction is adescendant outline with each persons assigned number, name, anddates of birth and death if known. Spouses are listed on thefollowing line with a + before the spouses name. If the parent wasmarried more than once, the letter a is used to denote childrenof the first marriage and the letter b to denote children of thesecond marriage. This descendant outline is also used in Chapters 1through 8 of the book to organize the information known about eachindividual in each branch of the family.
