Study the life, ministry, and teaching of Jesus Christ in harmonywith all the relevant material from the Gospels placed side by side on the page and in chronological sequence.

The goal of this volume by author and teacher J. Dwight Pentecost is to help you know Jesus better by getting a clearer picture of him through the four Gospelsthe books that directly depict his life, his ministry, and his heart. To show the harmony of the gospels, passages are arranged in parallel columns when more than one is cited so that you can easily see the accounts beside one another.

This simple, logical presentation of the complete parallel text with the outline greatly simplifies your study of Christs life. A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ is ideal for use with its companion volume, The Words and Works of Jesus Christ, a comprehensive study of the life of Christ.

A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ also makes an outstanding parallel Scripture text for any study of the gospels or the life of Christ.

All Scripture is in the New International Version (NIV).

A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ is first of all a harmony of the Gospels, meaning that the text of one, two, three, or four of the Gospels, depending on how many describe any one episode, is given on the same page. When more than one Gospel is cited, the passages are arranged in parallel columns so that the reader can easily compare and contrast the Gospel accounts with one another. Since the evangelists did not always narrate events chronologically, the editor has rearranged the materials in a probable chronological order. Such an arrangement makes it possible to study the life, ministry, and teaching of Jesus Christ in the Harmony with all the relevant material from the Gospels placed side by side on the page and in chronological sequence.

This study tool does not replace the study of the individual Gospels since it is still of primary importance to study and understand each Gospels unique perspective on Jesus. However, the Harmony is indispensable for studying chronologically Jesus life and ministry and for comparing all the accounts of the same saying, discourse, or event.

As its title suggests, A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ is also a companion volume to The Words and Works of Jesus Christ by J. Dwight Pentecost (Zondervan, 1981), a comprehensive study of the life of Christ. The outline that gives structure to the Harmony is the same outline used in Pentecosts earlier work. Thus, the two books can be used together.

Finally, we call attention to the Table of Scripture References (p. 169). This table enables one to find the page number in the Harmony of any gospel passage. It is especially helpful in locating those texts that do not appear in the Harmony in their original sequence.
