WHATS THE SILLIEST ANIMAL QUESTION YOU CAN THINK OF?

Its fun to get silly. In this book, we put together 100 of the silliest animal questions we could think up, then giggled a lot about those questions. And then we got serious and answered them with real science.

The answersand the facts we learn as we get to those answersmay surprise you. Lets get real: the animal kingdom can be completely bizarre. Just about anything you can think of, some animal can do it. Which is more out-there, the questions or the answers? We dont know, but heres the point: its about to get totally wild in here.

Furry, feathered, or finned. Flying, swimming, digging deep, or hanging from a tree. Animals are awesome, and their abilities and adaptations can sometimes seem unbelievable.

AMPHIBIANS

When you think of amphibians, think of the word both: amphibians need both water and land to complete their life cycle. For most amphibians, this means starting life as a larva (or tadpole if youre a frog or a toad) in the water. They swim around until they get big enough to try out life on land. They grow legs and sometimes lose their tails and become land dwellers. Amphibians have lungs, but they can alsowait for itbreathe (and absorb water) through their skin. Some make poison. Some are vibrant and bright. And some can really surprise you.

WHAT MAKES AXOLOTLS LIKE SUPERBABIES?
WHAT DO WE KNOW?

First of all, whats an axolotl (AK-suh-la-tul)? These adorable little amphibians are a rare kind of salamander, known for their smiley, frilled faces. Axolotls hang on to their juvenile form for their whole lives. While other amphibiansand other creaturesstart as youngsters and then grow up, changing along the way, axolotls keep their kid traits forever. Usually, they live in the water their whole lives, never transitioning to the land. They keep the dorsal fin that tadpoles are known for. And while they do develop lungs, they also keep their weird, feathery, completely outside-the-body gills. So thats the baby part of the axolotl story. Now, whats so super about them?

ANSWER: THEY CAN GROW, BABY, GROW!

This is where it gets good. Lots of animals can regenerate, or regrow, certain specific injured parts. But for an axolotl this is like a genuine superpower. It can totally regenerate almost any missing body part perfectly. Arms, legs, tails, jawsthey can regrow them all, with no scarring or anything!

WHAT IF YOU WIPED YOUR HANDS ON A POISON DART FROG?
WHAT DO WE KNOW?

Look, its right there in the name: poison dart frog. Though not all poison dart frogs are actually poisonous, a number of them release toxins through their skin. These frogs are so named because indigenous hunters of Central and South America would rub the tips of their blow darts on the frogs backs. This made blowgun attacks double deadly. If the darts didnt finish off the hunters prey, the frog poison would. (The beautifully named golden poison frog has enough poison in its tiny body to kill 10 adult humans.) Scientists arent sure how these frogs turn toxic, but some think it might be toxic stuff in the plants eaten by the insects the frogs eat.

ANSWER DO NOT DO THIS If you did you might be in big trouble While not all - photo 10
ANSWER: DO NOT DO THIS.

If you did, you might be in big trouble. While not all poison dart frogs are poisonous, and not all of them are poisonous to touch, its true that with some frogs, a touch is all it takes. The good news is that its hard to do this on purpose. These frogs even come packaged in bright colors to warn youand the frogs natural predatorsaway. The bold patterns and their blues, reds, yellows, and greens are signs that the frogs are not nice to eat and are potentially deadly.
