• the Spanish equivalent of the at the beginning of all words and phrases (el, la, los, las)
• the Spanish equivalent of a at the beginning of all words and phrases (un, una, unos, unas)
• the de at the beginning or end of all words and phrases (meaning of, from, or by)
• the designation of nouns as male or female, and with a few exceptions, the male or female alternatives for the terms used (novio for novia, etc.)
