For family and in memory of my mother
Herein lies a collection of delightful, captivating and easily readable humorous anecdotes the perfect antidote for business people enslaved to the daily commute, dull office cubicles and standard boardroom dcor.
Author Chiew Y. Chong lays bare the colourful aspect of WWFs inner soul, viewed through his eyes as their financial director and having spent many years himself in both the corporate world and that of the NGO.
Travelling from north to south, and east to west, Chiew takes us on a global jaunt with personalities and lifestyles that make up the fascinating world of philanthropy and social entrepreneurship.
Always insightful, yet leaving much room for the readers imagination, the author recites countless tales of wisdom, honesty and naivet some distance indeed from the sophisticated voice of corporate marketing and political spin. Yet strangely enough, reading one of the chapters, Freshly Cut Sandwiches, one detects the root cause of Wall Streets immense and complex greed in the primitive double-your-money borrowing scheme of the simple African witch doctor.
Chiews power of observation and vernacular writing style makes this book a very pleasant and entertaining read. Written from the heart, it is an anthology to the diversity of mankind. One could only wish to have been part of the wonderful tour du monde as it occurred: a fly-on-the wall so to speak, or a travel companion perhaps.

Founder and President, ICES Foundation
Former Chairman and CEO of Silicon Graphics, Inc., a publicly listed Silicon Valley based corporation.
This book is about my journey into the world of a non-profit organisation in this case, WWF. Its based on my personal first-hand experience of working in a conservation organisation and I believe it will convey a sense of the reality and the emotions of working at an NGO (Non Governmental Organisation).
I was initially hired as a finance manager. Three months later, at WWF International, I was promoted to the position of Director of Finance a job typically referred to as CFO, Chief Financial Officer, in corporations. Although I was for many years the CFO at WWF, this book, however, does not address technical financial matters. There are already many good books on this subject. Rather, its about a finance managers non-financial experiences at an international NGO.
This book is about interesting and committed people I have met during my time at WWF. It is also about events, at times unusual and strange, at times humorous, the kind, I hope, that makes good anecdotes for a book. I have enjoyed writing it and it is my sincere hope that you, in turn, will have pleasure reading it.
Chiew Y. Chong F.C.A.
Former Director of Finance, WWF International
Did I hear you right? You want me to fire you? said Werner Oppliger, my manager. Werner is Swiss German and like many Swiss Germans I have met, he is efficient and disciplined. He possesses a strong authoritarian voice.
What did you have for lunch? Too much wine? he said.
Yes, I said, but that was not in response to the wine question.
At that time I was employed by DEC, Digital Equipment Corporation, a major US global company. It was a prosperous firm, that ranked then as the second largest computer manufacturer in the world, after IBM. The multinational had been enjoying years of phenomenal growth. From the proverbial small garage, DEC, as we used to fondly call the company, had expanded across the globe. Geneva was the seat of the corporations European headquarters. Worldwide annual revenues of the multinational were considerable. European sales alone during the early 1990s exceeded six billion US dollars annually.
I was one of the senior finance managers located at the European headquarters where I had occupied various job positions. At one time I was the European Software Services Controller. At another time I was the European Marketing Finance Manager; whilst at other times I headed different units within European Finance, which had a total headcount in excess of a thousand professionals.
After many years of heady growth, annual turnover of the company eventually slowed. Previously, the company had enjoyed consistent double-digit income increases. However, over the years, as the computer industry matured, prices had begun to crash, leading to increasingly noticeable slower sales growth.
Accustomed to good times for far too long, the corporation had become large and unwieldy. The headcount had become bloated, surpassing a hundred thousand employees worldwide. To adapt to the changing times, DEC had already begun retrenching staff for some years. It was under these circumstances that I had my somewhat unusual conversation with my boss. My motivation was simple. Given that the ship was slowly sinking, I decided I might as well quit. Better quit before it was too late and collect a handshake payment on my way out.
Weve only been firing lower level personnel assistants, secretaries, I said.
So? What have you in mind? Werner asked.
We should also fire some executives.
Why?
To show that when we tighten the ship, all levels share the pain.
And who are you thinking of?
Me.
*
A year later, on a Friday afternoon, whilst I was sitting in my office in Geneva, I received an unexpected telephone call. It was from Werner.
Listen, you remember our discussions. When you asked to be fired? he said.
Yes.
Were running out of lower level employees. Do you still want it?
Yes.
You sure?
Absolutely not but give it to me.
My departure was thus confirmed, but had I made the right choice? At that moment I didnt know. What I did know was that my fate was sealed. I was to leave the comfortable and well-paid world of Fortune 500 multinationals.
I found myself at home. It felt good to be free it was a period of excitement and anticipation. Liberated from the necessity to work for a living, well, at least for a while, I felt relaxed. For the foreseeable short-term, I no longer needed to worry about work and all its related stress. It was enjoyable to be at home, in a quiet residential area, a twenty-minute drive from Genevas town centre. It was summertime. There was the garden, full of flowers. There was the pool and there was my favourite long chair under the shade of the poolside umbrella.
