Introduction The Magical Almanac A Brief History What started as a showcase - photo 3

Introduction

The Magical Almanac: A Brief History

What started as a showcase for the ideas of well-known magical practitioners has turned into a thriving community of magical people with a wide range of experience and know-how sharing their insights.

The earliest editions of Llewellyns Magical Almanac featured the work of luminaries such as Scott Cunningham, Ray Buckland, Patricia Telesco, Donald Michael Kraig, and Ted Andrews providing words of wisdom to help foster interest in Wiccan and Pagan culture. At the time, many did not know what to make of the small but dedicated community.

As the community grew, so did acceptance. Many people found that they could incorporate elements of Wicca and Paganism into their everyday livessimple rituals could be done during a coffee breakand no one else had to know! With spirituality being incorporated into basic hobbies and interests like herbs, cooking, nature, and the study of world history, activities once considered arcane and misunderstood, such as yoga and meditation, have become mainstream.

Later editions of the almanac have highlighted writers relatively new to the craft, including those who limit their craft to a specific niche like herb magic but are otherwise in the broom closet, as well as longtime practitioners. Readers have found that having multiple perspectives on a subject has helped shape their craft in ways they hadnt thought possible. Likewise, people who had specialized in a specific type of magic have found ways to cross over and try something new.

This brings us to this tome. Llewellyns Magical Sampler is a look at some of our most interesting articles over the last twenty-five years. A potent potpourri of rituals, spells, and essays on topics ranging from magical stones, dream interpretation, how to use lint as a tool, music in ritual, enhancing your creativity, magical baths, and the legends of Wales.

The Magical Almanac has always strived to be inclusivethe words you read could be those of a neighbor or a noted sage on any given topic. And because new ideas have always been encouraged, the almanac has helped launch the careers of many writers. You may find that while absorbing new takes on old ideas, the synergy may result in a new idea of your own.

However, there are no guarantees. All you can do is relax and enjoy the journey.

The Magic of Talismans

by Raymond Buckland

A talisman is a man-made object endowed with magical powers, usually either for protection or for bringing luck, in one form or another, to the bearer. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn stated that a talisman is a magical figure charged with the force which it is intended to represent. Donald Michael Kraig, in his book Modern Magic , defines a talisman as any object, sacred or profane, with or without appropriate symbols, which has been charged or consecrated by appropriate means and made to serve a specific end.
