We can either break under the weight of lifes challengesor we can bounce back and thrive!
The action in Shelley Plumbs powerful story of rediscovery and emotional healing takes place over the course of a single daythe day of her grandmothers funeral. As she wanders her grandmothers property, a place where she spent much of her childhood, the author is inundated with vivid memories. Reflecting back on the major events of her life, Plumb comes to terms with a painful truth: Her responses to those events, combined with a relentless drive to push herself harder and harder, have left her feeling totally lost, unmoored, and without a clear vision of who she is.
We follow her as she relives real-life events from the pastfrom her mothers shocking and sudden death when Plumb was a child to divorce, sexual harassment, her grandmothers death, and the delicate balance between being a professional woman and a wife and mother. Her reflections also bring forth important realizations about the foundations we build our lives on. If they are not solid, says Plumb, we wont be able to handle stresses when they come our way.
By the end of the day, Plumb makes sense of past memories and offers anyone of us who has ever felt lost in our own lives a way to find the stability, balance, and resilience we need to bounce back and take control of our futures. Readers will thank Plumb for a beautiful story and her generous and honest insights about relationships, how important it is to set boundaries, heal past wounds, and to let those we love and trust come close to us once again.

Praise for Shelley Plumb and To Break or Bounce

This book is full of imagery that is relatable. The grandmothers advice is priceless. I could hear my grandmother speaking to me as I read the book. To Break or Bounce is an easy read that addresses loss, how we deal with it, and how the reader can consider new ways to deal with it. This is also a book about self-care and mental health. A transformational read that is life changing.

Dr. Shelley Plumbs To Break or Bounce is a valuable tutorial on how to live a better and richer life. But unlike most tutorials, Dr. Plumbs is as emotional as it is intellectual. From her heart and mind, using both as a GPS, Dr. Plumb guides the reader on a journey to the spirit within. Step by personal step, even through her stumbles, Dr. Plumb shows the readers how to light and nourish the spark, the spirit, that is the core of each of us. Dr. Plumb never claims the journey is easy, but she does maintain throughout that unless we make that journey inward, we will constantly be at the mercy of and buffeted by, the vicissitudes of life. This book could easily have been titled, Going Inward, for in her doing so, Dr. Plumb has found the formula for how to bounce and not break from whatever life throws at us. Basically, Dr. Plumb is saying: Stop and smell the roses. For when you do, surprise, surprise, you discover you are your own rosebud just waiting to burst into bloom with your own special beauty.

Foreword

From the first moment I met Shelley, I was struck by her high-octane energy, her focus, and the very high standards she quite clearly sets for herself. I was also touched by her great personal warmth and generosity of spirit. We met in the middle of the African bush where she was filming wild animals from the back of an open vehicle. Her relish for the adventures that met us on our travels was infectious.

What I didnt know about was any of the events that had shaped her life and, more importantly, how she had responded to them. To Break or Bounce is a deeply personal account, beginning with Shelleys loss of her mother as a young child. She is unflinching in describing the painful challenges she has had to negotiatefrom professional burnout, divorce, sexual harassment, and losing the beloved grandmother to whom she never had the chance to say goodbye.

It is exactly these experiences, however, that make Shelley who she is today. Through suffering, she has attained insights, and these are the jewels she so generously shares in her book: the importance of embracing how things are, rather than how we wish them to be; letting go of constant striving for perfection; being flexible when faced with adversity; and always striving for balance. Shelley offers some potent images to illuminate these insights, one of the most powerful being a ballher chosen symbol of resilience.

As Shelley so vividly shows, even in our darkest moments, when we may feel we have lost all control of everything around us, we still have the freedom to choose our response. It is Shelleys gift to us all that she is the authentic embodiment of the choice she has taken: not to break, but to bounce back from adversity and light up the world. May this book carry her light to the hearts and minds of many readers around the world!
