Pembroke Dockyard: A Bicentennial History: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Pembroke Dockyard: A Bicentennial History" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

The Royal Dockyard at Pembroke Dock produced over 250 warships for the Royal Navy, including five royal yachts, between its founding in 1814 and its closure after the First World War. Prior to this, no ocean-going ships had ever been built on the south shores of Milford Haven, where the most complex piece of machinery used was the horse-drawn plough. Yet within twenty years Pembrokeshire men were building major British warships and they did so for the next hundred years. This long century, from the Napoleonic Wars until after the First World War, covered all the major changes in warship design and construction, from wood to iron and then steel, and from sail to steam, and paddle wheel to screw propulsion. In this authoritative and splendidly illustrated work, naval historian Lawrie Phillips, who was born and bred just outside the dockyard walls, tells the story of this royal yard, its ships and the Pembroke men who built them.

PART 2 T his list of Pembroke-built ships is based on several versions - photo 1

PART 2

T his list of Pembroke-built ships is based on several versions which vary in detail and which are reproduced from time to time. They include the list hitherto held in the offices of the resident naval officer, Pembroke Dock, various lists published locally during the nineteenth century and that used in Mrs Peters The History of Pembroke Dock published in 1905. I have made several amendments but some uncertainties remain, mainly the dates of ship launchings. Ship No 9, the cutter Sylvia of 1820, cannot be traced in any of the standard reference works, but she is referred to in Richard Roses Pembroke People , p. 101. The cutter has therefore been included in the following list. I have included listed harbour craft but they have not been given dedicated entries unless, as in one or two cases, they were subsequently commissioned for naval service. This list may still allow of further amendment but it is now as reliable as I can make it.

Any writer venturing into the realms of warship design and construction treads a path already beaten by earlier pioneers to whom he owes both homage and gratitude. I am grateful for the fellowship and guidance down the years of those great warship authorities Antony Preston, Oscar Parkes, David (D.K.) Brown, Jim Colledge and David Lyon, all of whom have already crossed the bar. The later works of Norman Friedman, Ben Warlow, Ray Burt, Alan Raven, John Roberts, Ian Buxton and especially Rif Winfield, all men of warship history fame and renown, have guided me and many others. My salute to them all.

Ships are generally covered chronologically but some of the same class or design have been grouped together into one entry to save repetition. In consequence, some individual ships appear out of launching sequence. Individual page references for each ship are given in the table over page.
