Introduction and Acknowledgments

Several years ago I wrote Kitchen for Kids, this books predecessor. I developed recipes for children that used only simple kitchen tools and were in small, manageable stages. Motorized appliances werent even required! All manner of culinary whizbang had become possible. Kitchen for Kids became an international bestseller and families now think of it as the real cookbook for children. Kids I meet can proudly recite the names of the recipes they made. It is remarkable.

Im sure this book, Everyday Kitchen for Kids , will also find its enthusiastic fans. In the past few years, Ive been testing scads of new recipe ideas I know kids will love. This book is a collection of the best ones. It has a larger roster of savory recipes than the first book because children love cooking for the family table. But theres also a grand selection of sweet goodies for kids to create on lazy days at home.

Every delicious recipe is photographed. As in the first book, none of the recipes requires children to use electric appliances, sharp knives, or the stovetop. Safety comes first so kids can truly take charge. Theyre so proud of the recipes they make!

Everyday Kitchen for Kids is the culmination of a dedicated and enthusiastic team:

The Inspiration.

Im lucky enough to travel through life with my own funny little tribe, my husband, John, and my kids, Lee and Livvy. Theyre my loves and my world. I think they were as excited to see this book come together as I was. They informally tested dishes and gamely brainstormed recipe names. My kids told me bluntly when a recipe wouldnt fly and patted me on the back when I tweaked one for the better. The book was often a family collaboration and we had fun with every minute of it!

The Believers.

Every book must have its champions behind the scenes. My dear friend Robert McCullough always kept this title at the top of his publishing agendaand close to his heart. Michael Burch and the team at Whitecap Books never compromised on the quality required to make this book the standout they hoped for.

The Beauty Merchants.

Photographer Ryan Szulc captured just the right balance of beauty and playfulness in every image. He managed the epic shoot with grace and good humor. And if ever a crumb fell astray, photo assistant Matt Gibson wielded his brand of invisible digital magic. Then pictures and words sprang to life under the keen eye of art director Michelle Furbacher.

The Wordsmiths.

A recipe only works as well as its words, numbers, and logic dictate. With the expert guidance of book editor Lana Okerlund and Whitecap editor Theresa Best, no detail was too small to polish. They helped create a whole new lexicon for a book to capture the imagination of its young audience.

The Mom Network.

Sometimes it takes a mom to get the job done rightin this case, several of them. Shirley Chow, Jen Haverty, and Charmaine Underwood-Graham went beyond the call of duty, testing recipes with their kids and inviting other families to get involved. Also, a huge hurrah for my kitchen assistant, Sarah Wallace. She powered through recipe after recipe during shoots without ever breaking a sweat, which is why she wins the award for Most Organized Person on the Planet.

The Ultimate Testers.

Of course, a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful kid cooks who measured and mixed every recipe with such care. I was inspired by your uncompromising quest for the best. Only recipes kids enjoyed eating and could make themselves made it into this book. A big thank you goes to my kitchen gang:
