Acknowledgments
I've been involved in many tough games in my coaching career, but writing these acknowledgments is one of the toughest things I've ever done. There are so many wonderful, giving people out there who have assisted me along the way, and that makes it extremely difficult to mention some and not others. So if you read this, and you're one of those who have helped me in some way and your name has been omitted, please accept my humble apologies and thanks. Its only a space limitation that prevents me from recounting everyone's kindnesses.
I got off to a good educational start in the Okay, Oklahoma school system because of excellent teachers and administrators. I am indebted to the late George Hopkins, Joe Eidson, and Harold Nicholson, who first influenced me to become a coach. Thanks to them and my teammates for getting the ball to me!
I will always have fond memories of my collegiate daysof my teachers, teammates, and two special coaches, Bobby Jack Rogers and Presley Askew.
My first coaching break came when Superintendent Tom J. Mayfield and F.E. Atkinson, personnel director, hired me at Las Cruces High. Luitt K. Miller was my principal there, and Rudy Camunez was the athletic director and football coach. Ed Boykin, Keith Colson, Willis Holmberg, and Cal Stutzman ably assisted me. All of these people were great guys to work with, as was the teaching staff and the array of terrific Bulldog players who brought me those state championships. Many of those fine athletes and their parents remain close friends of ours.
