Introduction

If all my talents and powers were to be taken from me by some inscrutable Providence, and I had my choice of keeping but one, I would unhesitatingly ask to be allowed to keep the Power of Speaking, for through it I would quickly recover all the rest.
Daniel Webster
I can remember standing up in fifth grade to make a presentation on Chopin, and when I said that he was a pianist, pronouncing it as if it had only two syllables, the other students broke into gales of laughter. At first I didn't understand what was so funny. Then I was mortified. I never got up to speak in public again until twenty-four years later, when I became a TV reporter, first at the CBS station in Washington, D.C., then at WLS-TV in Chicago.
Since then I have read every book on speechmaking I could find. I've tried every new idea I came across, and discarded those that didn't work. Through trial and error, mostly error, I've found ways to be more dynamic and effective as a speaker, and I've come to love giving speeches and making presentations. It was a good thing, because I kept getting more and more invitations to speak.
