Preface
Individual (and team) success in the work setting is greatly influenced by the quality of relationships that develop and the types of communication that take place. Effective communication exists when individuals work to communicate in ways that:
Enhance trust and respect.
Eliminate unintended roadblocks.
How to Speak and Listen Effectively is designed to offer you a practical approach to the communication process by increasing your awareness and understanding of what takes place in the process and by helping you develop and strengthen effective communication practices. The book is divided into four chapters:
Chapter 1. Why Don't People Communicate Better? This chapter introduces what the communication gap is and explores why it occurs between people. The focus of this part is to help reduce the confusion that can develop between you and someone else, when you make assumptions about another person's intentions.
Chapter 2. Eliminate the Negatives. This chapter helps you discover the major barriers that get in the way of effective communication: differences in people's perception of the world around them; and in the way they behave with one another. Just like the old song about "eliminating the negatives and accentuating the positives," this chapter and the next are designed to take a more in-depth look at building better communication techniques.
