this vast tunnel, which is life on Earth.
ERNEST LIVINGSTONE HUIE (MY DAD)
This isnt the book I was supposed to write. I built a successful 20-year career in media, first as a showbiz journalist before shifting into public relations, launching a card company that made history as the UKs first multicultural card brand stocked in chain stores. So a book on personal branding or starting a business wouldve been far more conventional and perhaps professionally strategic. But then Ive never been one for convention and as life would have it, this book chose me.
Ive spent almost two decades challenging perceptions both of myself and others. Crusading for equality, representation and inclusion across multiple sectors, my own background as a girl from a council estate who became a mother at 17 became the kick-ass engine behind my desire to close societys opportunity gaps. Whilst Ive been fortunate to have had many accolades and awards bestowed upon me for my outward accomplishments, its my internal journey thats been the most profound, presenting the steepest learning curves.
Sometimes, as we continue down well-trodden paths, we find ourselves presented with the option to detour. A chance to explore an alluring alternate road not configured on our sat nav. For me, this book is that path and the mere process of writing it has been laden with the gift of memories bubbling up to the surface of my consciousness, sometimes making for some uncomfortable learning.
The idea of writing a book first occurred to me several years ago. As a publicist I recognized that triumph over tribulation, paired with history-making in the high street and celebrity jaunts, had the ingredients of a good read. But how to weave together the different facets of my life and work them into one book? By Christmas 2015, I was tired. The 18 years spent striving, struggling and battling all the time had taken their toll. This controlled forwards motion had certainly paid dividends, taking me all over the globe, introducing me to many people and different worlds, transforming my life. And it had been incredible. But after eight years running my businesses Id become stale and spent. The passion was gone and rolling out of bed at 5:30 a.m. to plan my day no longer filled me with enthusiasm. I needed a fresh new challenge, to learn again, to feel awe.
