MONTRAL

ANDREA BENNETT

Montral is a place all its own with its own traditions architecture and - photo 3

Montral is a place all its own, with its own traditions, architecture, and language. Its known for its bilingualism, its dynamic culture, and its relaxed, laissez-faire attitude.

The city is home to a large population of students, artists, writers, and musicians, drawn by low living costs and support for the arts. Youll see signs of them everywherein murals, festivals, and live shows. Famous musical exports include Leonard Cohen and Arcade Fire; branch out and you may discover the citys next big act.

The city has been shaped by Franco-Anglo tensions, influxes of immigrants from all over the world, and an evolving approach to religion. Its roots come directly via 17th-century colonial missions from Franceand this is especially visible in Vieux-Montralbut today this history flavors its diverse culture rather than defining it. Once incredibly Catholic, the city is now known for its social liberalism and hedonistic attitude.

From the vine-covered alleys to the corkscrew staircases to each neighborhoods hidden architectural gems, Montral should be discovered at the street level. Explore its nooks and crannies, stopping for a coffee in a cozy caf or a drink in an up-and-coming microbrewery. Build some time into your travels to stumble across someone playing a public piano or wander through a small summer festival. Serendipity will make you fall in love with Montral.

THE BEST OF MONTRAL

Montral is a busy, vibrant city that is very walkable and bikeable. There is plenty to see and do in every neighborhood, and its fairly easy to get from one side of the city to another by bike or public transit. While youre traveling, keep an eye out for street festivals, especially in the Quartier Latin and the Plateautheyre everywhere in the summer.

This itinerary assumes that you wont be traveling by car. If youd like to get more exercise, substitute cycling by Bixi for public transit. If you or a traveling partner has mobility issues, skip the Mtro (its often not accessible) in favor of the bus or a cab.
