FOREWORD
Bicentennial fever was upon the land in 1976, spawning a great outpouring of celebratory writing. One of the more valuable works of scholarship set to type was this volume. Fray Angelico Chavez's translation and Ted J. Warner's editing of The Domnguez-Escalante Journal presented the report of a most remarkable trip in 1776 through part of the Rocky Mountains, across the eastern reaches of the Great Basin, and over the Colorado Plateau. The expedition failed in its mission to map a route from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Monterey, Alta California, but nonetheless was successful in providing a detailed inventory of a known, but undocumented, area of the tierra adentro.
This journal, recorded daily by junior ecclesiastic Fray Francisco Silvestre Vlez de Escalante, followed the genre of like reports submitted to the king via governor and viceroy during the preceding two hundred fifty years of Spanish exploration and settlement in America.
