Acknowledgments
While much of this Money Guide reflects the knowledge and insights Ive collected during three decades of writing and thinking about money, it also covers a few topics I have never previously tackled. To fill in the gaps in my knowledge, I consulted innumerable sources and relied heavily on my tireless research assistant, who quickly responded to my every request without the slightest complaint. Google, Im forever in your debt.
I also had the help of some humans. William Bernstein, Allan Roth and Jason Zweig were all kind enough to review the manuscript and offer their suggestions. Laura Saunders gave me her thoughts on the tax chapter and Rachel Silverman Robinson took a look at the estate planning section. Prudence Crowther assumed the arduous task of copyediting the book, David Glaubke designed the cover and the books interior, Bill Blase helped with publicity and Samantha Steele redesigned my website, .
This book came together over the course of two hectic years, during which I left Citigroup to return to journalism, moved homes, got married and more. Along the way, nobody was more supportive than Lucinda, my lover, best friend and now wife. This book is for you.
Part I: IntroductionYour Journey Begins Here
What you have in front of you is, I believe, the first personal-finance guide written and designed to take full advantage of the e-book format. Instead of me leading you from the first chapter to the last, you can choose your own path through the pages that follow, depending on whats relevant and interesting to you.
As youll discover, while this book ostensibly has 14 parts, its actually divided into 367 sections, each typically 250 to 350 words. The sections are designed to fit onto one or two pages of your electronic gadget, though they may flow onto additional pages if you use a large text size or read on your phone.
From here, you might quickly peruse the first section, which is devoted to .
Be warned: This is not a get-rich-quick book. You wont find a forecast for stock and bond returns in 2015. You wont find me proclaiming that some single investmentreal estate, cash-value life insurance, goldwill answer all of your financial prayers. If thats what you are looking for, please ask for a refund.
In January 2016, Ill be back with a new edition of the Money Guide , which will include updated figures for the economy, markets and taxes. Wish this book had more details on a particular topic? Let me know at and Ill try to build out that portion for next years edition.
In the meantime, enjoy your journeyand I hope you find what youre looking for.
1. Navigating This Book
You could read this Money Guide the same way you read a traditional book, working studiously from the first page to the last. But Ive tried to design it so that, if you have a specific question, you can quickly zero in on the information you want.
The hyperlinks embedded in each section allow you to navigate in the same way you would navigate a website. To drill down on a topic, touch the screen or click on the highlighted words to get to the next section. When a related section is in another part of the book, I have made that clear, so youll know before you click and find yourself many pages away. You will also find links to useful websites, indicated by .com and similar suffixes, which you can access directly if you have an Internet-enabled device. In addition, Ive included a , akin to an index. Got a topic thats on your mind? See if you can find it listed there.
E-books have a big drawback: no page numbers. To help you figure out where you are, Ive numbered the books sections. This is section 1. At the end of Part XIII, youll find section 367.
Throughout, I have incorporated the latest numbers on the economy, markets and tax rates. I have also included statistics on how the typical American is faring financially, so you can see how you stack up against your neighbors. And at the start of almost every chapter, youll find a list of five steps to take in 2015.
Finally, I have strong views on financial issuesand I realize not everybody shares my opinions. When I want to emphasize particular points or I figure my views might raise a few eyebrows, I have inserted them in a paragraph or two labeled Jonathans take.
2. January 2015: Where We Stand
Remember the financial panic of 2008 and early 2009? Like 9/11 for terrorism and Nixons resignation for national politics, it was a watershed moment for the financial worldand were still working through the consequences.
- The unemployment rate, which hit a high of 10 percent in October 2009, was 5.8 percent in November 2014.
- Real economic growth shrank at a -2.1 percent annualized rate in 2014s first quarter, but then surged 4.6 percent in the second quarter and 3.9 percent in the third.
- The savings rate in 2014 was running around 5 percent of personal disposable income. Thats better than 2005s low of 2.5 percent, but the Great Recession clearly hasnt brought on the new era of frugality that many expected.
- Total borrowing by Americans, including mortgage debt, hit a peak of $12.7 trillion in the third quarter of 2008. By 2014s third quarter, it was down to $11.7 trillion as Americans paid off debt and defaulted on loans. Thats equal to $45,600 per household.
