INTRODUCTION
Spiralizing: Understanding the Basics
You may be working out every day; yet, if your food is not healthy, you are still a long way to leading a healthy life. Most of us love the traditional pasta but the good news is that a new type of noodles is gradually taking over our kitchen tables. Spiralized veggies and fruits are the latest "shift" in healthy eating. Spiralizing is the innovative method of cutting organic fruits and vegetables into spiral-shaped strands like noodles, linguini, pasta and even rice.

Spiralizing is the process of varying blade and technique, thereby making it possible to transform veggies into a remarkable range of sizes, shapes and textures. Spiralizing enhances the nutritional value and taste profile of vegetables and fruits. Spiralized vegetables are inherently gluten free, free of preservatives and generally healthy. Spiralized vegetables are made by using a spiralizer. A spiralizer is a unique kitchen tool that slices fruits and vegetables into spiral shapes and into noodle-like sizes. Although the julienne and mandolin peelers have always been in the market, they make very thin strands that are mostly good for raw recipes and not for cooking.

The spiralizer is a more appealing sophisticated Japanese invention that functions as a giant pencil sharpener. It works on all kinds of veggies; from zucchini, carrots, cucumbers and sweet potato; to beets, pumpkin, radish, or turnips. It transforms vegetables like zucchini into pasta, sweet potato into curly fries and beets into rice. These new kinds of noodles or spiralized vegetables make great gluten-free, low-carb or paleo, alternative to traditional pasta. Spiralizers are available in different styles. There are generally of three types small hand-held spiralizers, vertical and horizontal spiralizers (counter- mounted).

They are portable, reasonably priced and easy to use. Handheld Spiralizers The most inexpensive option but hard work to use, the hand held spiralizers churn out small quantities of noodles and will take only vegetable that has a diameter of 2/5cm or even less. Its main advantage is its portability and affordability but it takes time and wastes lots of vegetables that other models can easily use up. Horizontal Hold Spiralizers While this type handles much larger diameter vegetable than the hand held model, the vegetable must be held in place with a tiny metal ring which cuts a pencil-size core from the centre when the mechanism is turned. This is a little wasteful, particularly for very narrow veggie. Additionally, the metal ring is not completely effective as the veggie may slip out of place during slicing.

However, it is excellent with celeriac. Vertical Hold Spiralizers This is very easy to use since the veggie sits on top of the blade. It wont fall out of position and naturally exerts pressure downwards as the handle is turned. A spike holds the vegetable in place, ruling out wastage and core cut- out. Additionally, it can take shorter length of veggie than the horizontal as well as a slightly smaller diameter. The paderno spiralizer is one of the most popular brands in the market.

How To Use A Spiralizer STEP 1: Check the size of the vegetable. For smooth unbroken noodles, veggies should be 2 inches or more in diameter. Otherwise, the veggies will come out as sliced or in half- moon shapes. STEP 2: Cut off both ends of the vegetables completely. This way, the spiralizer will have better grip on the vegetable. Afterwards, peel if you want; but for butternut squash, peeling is essential.

STEP 3: Secure the vegetable at both ends and center it into the spikes. Be sure to press the flesh firmly into the spikes. STEP 4: Center the other end of the veggie in the sharp gripper. This helps to secure your vegetables for best results. STEP 5: Secure spiralizer into a flat surface by pressing suction cups down onto a flat countertop. This helps to create thicker, stronger, noodles especially when spiralizing celeriac and rutabaga or other more difficult veggies.

STEP 6: Turn the handle clockwise to make your noodles. Spiralizer Blades Spiralizer blades help to create vegetable spirals of different sizes and shapes. It is important to know the type of blade that is suitable for the meal you wish to make. Most spiralizers have three different attachment blades. The Paderno spiralizer, for instance, has 3 4 blades. Heres a quick guide on the three main blades and their functions: The Straight Blade : This straight blade is perfect for producing long ribbon-like pasta spirals.

A spiral shredder, this blade makes bigger slices of vegetables and its perfect for zucchini pasta ribbons, spiralized cucumber and apple or potato chips. It is the blade A in the Paderno spiralizer. The Chipper Blade: This blade with its large triangular shredder blade, produces long noodles and thick spaghetti-like noodle spirals. It is best for making curly fries, spiralized zucchini, carrots and parsnips. It is the blade B in the Paderno spiralizer. Shredder Blade : This blade has a fine shredder and produces thinner pastas and noodles.

It is great for creating thinly sliced veggies and spiralizing just about anything. It is the blade C in the Paderno spiralizer.

Why Spiralize
More Yields, More Visually Appealing Meals Spiralizing vegetables and fruits yield more than dicing, cubing or chopping them. Just one small spiralized vegetable can yield as much as several cups of light and spiral veggies. By turning whole vegetables into appealing noodle shapes, you are consuming more vegetables every day, enjoying a big satisfying portion and saving up some money in the process. Spiralized dishes are also more visually appealing and appetizing, making you want to eat more healthy organic foods.

Helps Promote Weight Loss And Maintenance. Spiralizing promotes weight loss and maintenance. Vegetable noodles are low in calories, carbs, fat and sugar. As you eat more spiralized vegetables and less of processed foods, you lose weight easily. Vegetables such as zucchinis have high water retention and helps in detoxification. Your body is rid of unwanted toxins and this leaves you refreshed and hydrated.

Vegetables with its high dietary fiber content, makes you feel fuller for longer. Eating vegetables makes you feel light but energized. You are strong and healthy and ready for a productive day. Saves Time In these busy days, its stressful getting a healthy meal ready for dinner. However, spiralizing is quick and easy. It takes just a few minutes to prepare delicious noodles and pastas.

Compared to grains, vegetables cook more quickly. By spiralizing vegetables, you are creating healthy and delicious meals at a breeze. You can also spiralize your veggies ahead of time, thereby saving more time. They Are Clean-Eating Friendly. Unlike regular pastas, noodles and rice that are made from flour, wheat or rice, spiralized vegetables and fruits are clean and unprocessed. They are particularly helpful for people who are committed to a vegetarian, vegan or Paleo lifestyle.

It is easier to follow special diets as soups, noodles, vegetable strips or fries adhere to the strict guidelines of specialty diets. Those who are sensitive to gluten also find it very helpful since spiralized veggies are naturally gluten-free Encourages Creativity Spiralizing challenges our creative side. Since every vegetable has its own nutrients, textures and flavors, we now have a chance to invent or reinvent different kinds of meals using our preferred vegetables and fruits and those we are not so familiar with as well. Spiralizing is really a creative and interesting way to prepare meals. There isnt a dull moment as you look forward to the outcome of your fantastic creations. Its kid friendly, & family too.
