PREFACE
This collection of life histories evolved as a joint project of Sarah Mirza and Margaret Strobel over a period of several years. The doctoral dissertation research of which these interviews were a part in 1972-1973 and 1975 was funded by a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Abroad grant and a Woodrow Wilson Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship in Women's Studies. The Campus Research Board of the University of Illinois at Chicago funded two trips by Margaret Strobel to Los Angeles to confer with Sarah Mirza. The Office of Social Science Research at UIC provided word processing for most of the English text. The manuscript was completed during Margaret Strobel's tenure as a Fellow of the Institute for the Humanities at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Evelyn Okanya typed the Swahili texts. Special thanks are due to Joan Hoff-Wilson, who had the Swahili typescript scanned onto a computer disk, saving much time and innumerable errors in the separately published Swahili volume.1We also wish to thank the Kenya National Archives for assistance in the research that contributed to the introductions to each chapter. Yale University Press graciously agreed to allow us to use the maps from Margaret Strobel's
