Series Editor Introduction

Sleep Disorders in Women: A Guide to Practical Management, once again edited by H. Attarian and M. Viola-Saltzman, appears here in its third edition following the first edition in 2006 and the second edition in 2013, all of which have been published by Humana Press in its Current Clinical Neurology series. During this relatively short time span, the number of chapter topics as well as the number of authors has climbed considerably. The current volume once again adds a number of new authors and several new chapters to the previous editions. Several new chapters concern pediatric sleep disorders, sleep disorders among sexual minorities, and sleep as it relates to breast cancer. Excellent figures, tables, and abundant references abound throughout the volume. What originally began with an emphasis on underappreciated gender bias which existed in the field of sleep disorders has grown into a comprehensive review of the wide variety of sleep disorders that occur uniquely in women and here again are laid out according to stages of life in women which differentiates them from the less age-dependent patterns of sleep disorders occurring in men. This book once again provides a wealth of useful practical information for health-care workers in a variety of clinical specialties which will contribute to an improved quality of life in women with these disorders.

Preface to the Third Edition

Gender bias is pervasive in medical research. However, differences among the sexes are gradually being defined, especially in the field of sleep medicine.

This review now contains six sections based on womens life stages. We are grateful to the authors who have expanded and updated the content of their chapters. We are also pleased to offer four new chapters that explore gender and sex differences, sleep disorders in sexual minorities, and sleep as it relates to breast cancer.

It is our intention thatSleep Disorders in Women: A Guide to Practical Management, third edition, will continue to emphasize the importance of womens sleep disorders. Those benefiting from this book may be sleep physicians, other practitioners of sleep medicine, or general practice physicians who seek to meet the sleep needs of their female patients.
