Scooter Toby Davidson. Originally from Miami, Florida but educated in New York City, Scooter spent more than twenty years designing and promoting various artistic concepts, including retail venues with Donald and Ivana Trump in the 1980s. The love of animals and a strong identification with the competitive nature of athletes sparked her interest in horseracing many years ago. Unable to ride horses herself because of a childhood accident, she wanted to find a way to honor women who do, hence, her contribution to this book.
Valerie Anthony. Born in England, Valerie hails from a journalistic family. Her father owned the Weekly Sporting Review, the largest sports paper in London for twenty-five years. She joined her father in the business and later founded the Record Mirror, a weekly show business publication still offered in England. In the 1960s Valerie came to New York, worked with artists and executives at RCA, and married Dee Anthony, who managed the careers of Tony Bennett, Peter Frampton, and Peter Allen. She also ran successful companies of her own. Currently, Valerie is coproducing projects with new artists and writers.

Foreword
It is another Breeder's Cup Day, a momentous day in horse racing. I find myself glued to the television, watching the first race. As the horses come out of the saddling paddock for the post parade, I start to think about how alive I felt when I came out to parade my mounts during this introduction of horse flesh to the betting crowd. When the horses approach the gate, adrenaline begins to course through my veins as I watch the handlers load the horses and hear someone shout, "One back," while the other handlers can be heard yelling, "Wait, no, no, no!" because some of the horses are acting up. In a fleeting instant there is a moment of silence, then the bell sounds, the gates swing back, and they're off. As I watch these beautiful animals and their riders jockey for position, my heart starts to pound, and my mind begins to remember the days of old when I rode these gallant animals to victory.
As I watch the second and then the fourth Breeder's Cup races, I note that a woman rider is aboard a mount in each. Julie Krone rides to a second-place victory in the second race, and Donna Barton finishes second as well in the fourth race. As I watch each of these races, I feel myself swell with pride for each woman jockey because she is living proof we made it in a male-dominated sport. I also feel some sadness because in my day of glory a chance to ride in such a prestigious race was not a reality, only a dream. A special kind of feeling consumes me as I watch Donna Barton perform and then listen to her synopsis of the race she has just ridden. I am just amazed at how much she looks like her mother, my dear friend, Patti Barton. I recall the experiences that Patti and I shared as we rode races together in 1969 and the early 1970s.
