Introduction
Hello quilting friends!
Have you ever wandered into a quilt store, laid your eyes on a wonderful bundle of fat quarters, and just couldnt resist? You just knew you could turn that beautiful little collection into a great quilt. Right?
Only now, it is two years later (oopsmore?) and that bundle is still sitting on your shelf, still wonderful, but no closer to becoming a beautiful quilt than when you bought it.
Sound familiar?
Maybe you wandered into the quilt store looking for fabrics for a project, and then you saw it. The cutest little charm packoh, the fabrics were darling! You just had to have it! What to do with it? No worries, you will think of something. Or maybe it was a jelly roll that you couldnt keep your hands off.
Yeah, weve got those too.
This book will help you to turn all those fun stacks of fabric in your stash into something truly wonderful! We have designed thirteen great quilts to use up those jelly rolls, fat quarter bundles, and charm squaresno matter when you bought them.
We will talk you through mixing fabrics. We know its scary, but its okay. Really. We are here to help. And weve thrown in a few smaller projects and a couple of quilts where we change it up and add some extra borders. Sound good? Then lets get mixing!
Lets Mix It Up!
The Stash
As quilters, we all have a stash. We love our fabric! The big question is, Why dont we use our stash? Well, there are as many reasons for that as there are quilters. But lets explore a few of the common reasons.
You bought it a while ago and it just no longer floats your boat. Quilters are notoriously frugalsome of us even turn scraps into quilts! But that shelf of unwanted fabrics can really stymie our creativity. Looking at things like that makes us feel guilty because we bought it and now we dont want to use it!
So, do something!
One idea would be to turn the fabric into a charity quiltwe have a couple of great patterns in the book that are not hard to dowhy not use .)
You love it and just cant bear to cut it up. We get that. Some people collect stamps, other people collect coins, and quilters collect fabric. Enjoy it, pet itjust dont hide it away and forget about it! You could display it on a shelf (not a shelf that gets direct sunlight of course) and just refold it every few months to prevent fade lines and permanent creases. But that way, you can see it, enjoy it, and get inspired by it!
You love it, you want to use it, but you dont know what to do with it! When you bought it, you were sure you were going to create something amazing, but something else came up and now you dont know what to do.
Thats where we come in. Lets chat about how to start using those beautiful jelly rolls, charm packs, and fat quarter bundles that we have collected over the years and turn them into great quilts!
Color TheorySort Of
A little dash of this, a little pinch of that ... just like any good recipe, it is all in the mix!
Many quilters like kits. Why? They dont have to worry about choosing prints or colorsit is all done for them. Mixing colors and fabrics is scary for many people. Many quilters like using fabrics from the same line, and why not? The fabric companies have made it so easy for us. With a mix of small- and large-scale prints and blenders, we know the fabrics will all match perfectly, so it is hard to pass up.
