Introduction
Ben sat by the phone with Grace's phone number written on a piece of paper in front of him.
"Just call her, man," said Doug. "Just pick up the phone and call her, and when she answers ask her out."
"Bu-bu-bu-but what if I start to sssstutter?" Ben asked with exasperation.
"You won't. Listen, man, just relax and take it easy. Go slow," Doug suggested.
"You just don't und-d-d-derstand!" said Ben. "It's n-n-not that easy! Besides, your t-t-telling me to calm down makes it wwwworse."
"Ben, just call her."
"OK," Ben said. He picked up the phone and dialed the number in front of him. After two rings he heard "Hello!" He recognized Grace's pretty voice. He smiled and opened his mouth to return the greeting, but nothing came out!
"Hello?" Grace said again.
Ben tried again, but still the words seemed to get stuck inside his mouth.
"Hello! Is anyone there?" Grace demanded.
Finally Ben started, "H-h-h"
But by then Grace said, "Creep!" and hung up.
Ben put the phone down. "Sssee? I t-t-told you," he said.

"I'm sorry, man. Do you want me to call her back and ask her out for you?" Doug suggested. Ben told Doug that he didn't think Grace would be interested in going out with a guy who stuttered so badly that he couldn't even call her and ask her out himself. Doug didn't know what to tell his friend because he was afraid there was a chance that Ben was right. Maybe Grace wouldn't want to go out with Ben.
