Preface to the Second Edition
It is wonderful to be able to write a second edition of this text. There have been remarkable research reports since the first edition and I am grateful to be able to present them and to incorporate them into the limbic model. Those of you who read the earlier edition will find this one very different in both style and content. The perspective of several years has pointed out to me how stilted, formal and, well... pompous the writing style was in the first edition. I have made every effort to avoid such errors here. I hope you find this edition both informative and at times amusing.
The contents have been greatly altered. The review of brain structures and areas in Chapter One has been improved and expanded. Information on the basal ganglia and the cerebellum is included that strongly suggests that these areas contribute not just to speech and language but also to cognition and emotional expression. I think many of you will be surprised by the larger role assigned to these areas for responsibilities not traditionally associated with them.
Chapter Two is entirely new and describes the acquisition process of conditioned responses and how such responses can interfere with normal motor initiation and completion. Chapter Three is also new and reviews the findings of several of the most recent imaging studies of the brains of subjects who stutter. The results of each study are viewed through the perspective of the information presented in the review in Chapter One and the data on learning and conditioning in Chapter Two. Chapter Four addresses the ways in which the information in the previous chapters can be used diagnostically. Chapter Five presents treatment goals and procedures distilled from the first four chapters. It also attempts to summarize the main thrust of the information and inference presented in a section entitled what else? 'summary'. Finally, there is an 'afterword' that suggests some questions and activities for future research.
I very much hope that this second edition results in controversy and that you enjoy it. I hope that it stimulates your interest in the limbic system, the neocerebellum, basal ganglia and the right hemisphere and

how these areas and structures may contribute to both the etiology and maintenance of stuttering. There is an answer to the why and how of stuttering we just haven't asked the right questions yet. I hope that this text contributes a few good questions and, maybe, one or two answers...
