Here I am, upstairs in my room, with sounds of the soft spring evening drifting in through the open window. A robin is singing sweetly from the old apple tree, and a pair of turtledoves are cooing from their perch on the wash line. Neighbor Eli's lambs are baaing from their meadow.
The warm breeze floating in the window is laden with the scent of green grass and freshly plowed fields. A mellow dusk is descending over the countryside, softly, sweetly, peacefully. Ah, springtime, surely it must be the sweetest time of the year, when all nature is awakened and renewed.
I am feeling happy and excited because today is my sixteenth birthday. A whole new era is opening before me. I've finally reached the right age for rumschpringing! (running around with the youths). In one way I can hardly wait to attend my first singing, on Sunday evening. In another way I feel half frightened, wanting to be a little girl again, turning around and hiding behind Mamm's (Mom's) skirts. Sigh!
I wonder, Will I ever get this brand-new diary filled?

I'm enthusiastic now about keeping a journal, but will it last, or will I toss this in the wastebasket after a few weeks? We'll see.
Maybe starting a new journal like this (something I never did before) will help me in sorting out my feelings and thoughts. I want to write down my goals and dreams for the future.
