PREFACE
The theme of the Technical Discussions of the Forty-fifth Session of the World Health Assembly was Women, Health and Development. Just prior to the World Health Assembly, the Global Network of WHO Nursing Collaborating Centres met in Ferney-Voltaire, France, for its fifth Annual Network Meeting. Given the importance of developing a global perspective on women's health and development, many of the Centres agreed to develop a paper which represented either the country in which the Centre was located or a special perspective on women's health that reflected the work of the Centre. This book is a compilation of most of these reports. Although many countries are not represented here, it is our hope that in the future authors from other centres will make additional contributions to our efforts to describe women's health status. Some of the problems our authors faced were civil war, time constraints, limited resources, and availability and access to information. Moreover, some of the issues we asked our authors to write about are sensitive topics within their culture. We want to acknowledge the courage and risk some authors took to present candid information regarding women's health status within their countries.
