Acknowledgments
I cant find the words to express the love and gratitude deep in my heart for Karen, John, Ed, Chrissty, Grace, and Catherine Honos for their love and support. Thanks to Carole and Bill Webb, and Anna, Rosanna, and Dale Chalfant for their constant encouragement and occasional babysitting.
This book owes everything to those who shared their stories. I feel like all of you are lifetime friends. Thanks to Kimberly McCoy for being a sister soul and leadership coach for me. I hate to think what this book would be without the steady inspiration from Steve Prevett; thanks to him for opening his story and letting his family be included in this bookand for the Monty Python consultation. Captain Scott Ohlrichs brilliant mind contributed enormously to my understanding of creativity and also gave me my favorite visual image of a person with ADD: Who else could stand on the roof of a burning house in an icy rainstorm and laugh at how they have the greatest job in the world? I am eternally grateful to Paul Orfalea for his courage in sharing his story, and to his staff and students for a fascinating collection of stories about this remarkable man. Brian Rochas sweet generosity, wise consultation, engaging dinner conversation, free meal with all calories accounted for, and invitation to Rochapalooza were some of my favorite gifts received in writing this book. Damon Harpers steady influx of warmth and encouragement and upbeat sharing has been a bright light for me throughout this process. I cant think of Hagen without adding in my own mind, Hagen the hilarious; thanks for being so memorable and sharing so much for this book. Youve become a top-shelf friend and incredible collaborator on education before medication. It was with great delight that I was joined by Dr. Stephanie Moulton Sarkis. I thank her for her expert and personal contribution to this book; it was a joy to travel with a fellow writer. And finally, I am awed by Bill Jacobs Jr.s dedication to the families who struggle with ADD and his own profound contribution to the field. I will also always remember the illuminating conversation with Marc Allen and his wonderful example of breaking down limiting beliefs. Thanks also to Steve Brown, both for his story and for giving me the idea of presenting a series of profiles.
