PREFACE
My approach in this book results from the three roles that have defined my personal involvement with family businesses: as the academic interested in the generation, validation, and dissemination of ideas; as the consultant seeking to improve the lives of business families that I work with; and as the son who grew up in a family enterprise and has experienced firsthand many of the joys and pains that go with success and failure in these companies.
In 1954 my father founded "Segurosca," an insurance brokerage company that later became Grupo Lansberg in Venezuela. In its heyday, Grupo Lansberg was one of the largest insurance brokerage companies in the Spanish-speaking world. Although I never had a managerial role in the family business, I was a participant in the sessions it held at least twice a year for five years with Richard Beckhard, one the leading thinkers in field of organizational development, and his then-wife, Elaine Kepner, a specialist in Gestalt psychology, to discuss and plan my father's succession. The sessions were exciting. I was still in graduate school when the planning process started and I was captivated by the issues we had to address in our family and business as we attempted to plan for this transition.
Unfortunately, the process did not work out as we had hoped. My brother and a professional non-family executive took charge at a time when the economy of the country was falling apart. Instead of battening
