We dedicate our work to the encouragement of Music Education and the tremendous benefits it brings to
those who embrace it. Playing piano enhances the mind of a child, enriches family life, and brings stress
relief to adults. Our thanks to all who contribute to this goal.
Introduction
About 100,000 new pianos are sold in the United States each year. This figure has remained relatively constant for the past 15 years. It includes all new vertical, grand, and digital pianos. The estimated number of used pianos that change hands each year is somewhere between three to five times the number of new instruments. So, as many as half a million pianos change hands each year in the United States!
How do these buyers decide on the pianos they end up purchasing? Their decision-making processes are nearly as varied as the instruments themselves. Nevertheless, several common factors have an influence on the buying process, including
Budget.
Size of piano their space can accommodate.
Performance capabilities.
Appearance (the color, finish, and style of the piano).
Name brand recognition.
Prestige of a brand or model.
Recommendations from someone who knows about pianos.
Connecting with a particular salesperson or dealer.
In this book we help you understand how each of these factors might play into your own decision and we equip you with the knowledge needed to find the right piano for you.
Why We Wrote This Book
The process of buying a piano should be fun and easy. Sadly, over and over again, we have seen customers shop the fun and excitement right out of the process by belaboring it for far too long. Weve even had customers take years to make a decision, and then a not so good one at that! The process turns from pleasurable to painful when you lack confidence in your ability to choose the best piano for your needs. Sales demos might seem confusing, and you may fall victim to a salespersons hype or disreputable tactics. We dont want that to happen to you. So weve written
The Complete Idiots Guide to Buying a Piano for several reasons:
We saw the need for a comprehensive piano-buying guide written by people from within the retail piano sales industry. All other books have been written by piano players or piano technicians. In addition to playing and working on pianos, we have over 44 years of experience in the retail piano business, and so have insights others do not.
We believe that as a buyer of a big-ticket piece of merchandise, you should be armed with enough facts and knowledge to make an intelligent buying decision.
We cannot think of a product so fraught with misinformation and an institutionalized mythology as the piano, and we want to cut through the misconceptions for you.
We are passionate about this stuff, and we stand behind our information with confidence that comes from our many years in the industry. We promise to tell it like it is!
Who This Book Is For
If you are serious about purchasing a piano within the next few days, weeks, or months, then this book is for you. It will help you make a better, more informed purchasing decision.
Beginners and First-Time Buyers
Much of this books content is for the first-time piano buyer. Its for the parent, grand-parent, aunt, uncle, or family friend buying for a beginner child or family of children. Its for the adult who took piano lessons as a child and now wants to pick it back up. Its even for the 89-year-old neighbor of one of our editors who bought herself a piano after decades of not playing! Whichever situation you find yourself in, we offer enough basic information to help you understand what pianos are all about and how to figure out which one is right for you.
Experienced Players Upgrading
This book is also for the more experienced player. Despite being an upper-intermediate, or advanced player, or even a music teacher, you may not have current knowledge of the models and features available and price tags they come with. Or your confidence as a player may not transfer to confidence as a shopper. Most of this book will be of use to you, but we dedicate Chapter 18 to your unique needs and likely questions. The buyers guide in the chapters of Part 3 will help you as well. Also, be sure to check out Chapters 16 and 17 for the latest electronic gadgets and gizmos that you can get these days.
Institutional Purchases
This book is also for anyone buying a piano for an institution, such as a school, college or university, house of worship, or commercial venue, including hotels and restaurants. You might be the designated purchasing rep for your institution but know next to nothing about pianos. Or maybe you do know a lot about pianos and have your sights set on particular brand or model or size, but other folks back in your organization control the purse strings. We devote Chapter 20 to you, as well as portions of Chapters 4 and 14, though all chapters of the book contain valuable information relevant to institutional purchases.
Clearly, the needs of a family with a six-year-old beginner are different from those of a teacher or a graduate student in piano performance, but the advice and information needed to make an informed decision is often the same. So, whether beginner or experienced or somewhere in between, this book will answer your questions and guide you through the process.
How to Get the Most Out of This Book
Our goal is to help you focus your energy and resources toward the purchase of a suitable instrument that meets your needs. We want you to spend enough time shopping for a piano that you see a good range of choices, but not so much time that the process becomes a burden for you. Reading this book will save you time when you hit the stores because youll know what youre looking for and wont waste your time on instruments that dont fit your selection criteria. And you wont lose time or get frustrated by a sales pitch that takes you in the wrong direction or a demo that you dont understand.
Heres an overview of the process we recommend for using this book and other things to complement what youll learn here:
Step 1: Spend a few hours skimming through this book and highlight, underline, or make notes. Pay special attention to the chapters in Part 1 that help you determine your strategy and appropriate mindset.
Step 2: Spend a couple of hours on the Internet to see what various manufacturers have to offer. (Use Chapter 5 as your guide in this.)
Step 3: Measure your space. Will you need a vertical or grand? If you have room for a grand, just how grand can it be?
Step 4: Make notes about your rooms acoustics, including the size of the room, height of the ceiling, type of flooring, and number of windows and drapes.
Step 5: Measure your wallet. Dont mortgage the farm, but dont be too cheap, either. You can get preliminary ideas of pricing in Chapter 2.
Step 6: Identify the dealerships youll visit and plan your overall shopping attack. Refer to Chapters 3 and 4 for shopping strategies and pitfalls to avoid, and use the shopping comparison forms provided in Appendix B.
Step 7:
