Bram Fischers life has all the drama and intimacy of a story worth telling. Born into a prominent Afrikaner nationalist family, Fischer became a Rhodes scholar and distinguished lawyer, and in 1964 led a defense of Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and others in the Rivonia trial. Fischer was sentenced to life imprisonment for his own political activities against apartheid. Before his sentencing he spent nine months underground, in disguise. For a time, he was South Africas most wanted man, his cause recognised and celebrated around the world. His story is one of those rare lives that weave together the personal and political and revise our sense of both in a world revolving furiously around issues of identity. This book was the winner of the prestigious Sunday Times Alan Paton Award for non-fiction writing.

"Stephen Clingman's passionate study of Afrikaner dissident Bram Fischer brings to light a ... figure who was one of the founding fathers of the liberation struggle and a close comrade and friend of Mandela's." Washington Post Book World
"The publication of Stephen Clingman's biography of Bram Fischer is a long overdue tribute to a most remarkable man.... The result is both inspired and inspiring." The Sowetan
"This book on Fischer is like a crowbar. One can almost hear how the old, heavy and stiff beams of wood crack as they are prised away with every chapter you read.... [Clingman] handles the subject with a respect that does not shy away from the question marks.... The book allows Bram Fischer to live as a person." Beeld
"I simply urge readers to get hold of it and read it - for its telling of the story of an extraordinary South African and for its insight into the history of struggle and counter-struggle for the meaning of being South African." Sunday Times (Johannesburg)
