Part of Chapter 7 first appeared as 'Writing in a fractured society: the case of Nadine Gordimer', in L. White and T. That truth is not all the truth
My Son's Story
Looking back on a book published six years ago can induce a strange sense of parallax: things are true and not true at the same time. Or, is it because one is seeing them at different times that the nature of their respective truths appears different, though these truths may overlap? A changing present affects our view of the past, and there is always the temptation to go back and change, make everything 'fit'. Yet, the temptation offers its own self-contradictory awareness: that the quest for finality can never be fulfilled. Perhaps the deeper truth lies in the sense of parallax itself.
That is one reason why, except for the addition of this new Prologue, nothing has been altered in the book, even though, on occasion, there may be things that I feel could be textured in different ways or changed. The fact is that this book was written from a specific time and setting with a particularly unified vision, and it may be wiser to allow that to come through. Indeed, it seems appropriate that a study that explores Gordimer's historical consciousness should speak so definitely from its own moment. What the text says reflects on its own awareness as much as on the object of its reflections: this is a hermeneutic principle now embodied in my book two ways, and of course it applies to this Prologue as well.
