PREFACE
Much has changed since The Silent Garden was first published in 1982. Much more is known about American Sign Language, a fully developed language with its own grammar, rules, and capability for subtle communication. People who are deaf have broken through old barriers for all to seeHeather Whitestone became the first deaf person to win a national title in the Miss America Pageant, and Marlee Matlin won an Oscar for her portrayal of a fiery, independent deaf woman in the movie Children of a Lesser God. In the last decade or so, deaf people have taken their places in every area of societyas professional sports figures, actors, lawyers, doctors, teachers, stockbrokers, and writers. Also, thanks to a wealth of movies, television programs, books, and articles on the subject of deafness, more hearing people now recognize that deafness is not about hearing but about communication.
This new awareness, as well as the presence of a new generation of deaf and hard of hearing people working and creating in the mainstream of life, has helped to nudge into the collective consciousness an idea once apparently incomprehensible to hearing peoplethat deafness is not a handicap but a state of being, different from but no more limited or restricted or disabling than the hearing state.
