For Circus Clown and Elephant, Robert Vigiletti scanned a transparency into a computer, manipulated the colors and textures, and then ink-jet printed it on watercolor paper.

Thanks to:

I dedicate this book to artist-photographer Robert Vigiletti who has given me endless assistance over the years. Get canned-air to blow dust off your negatives, hed say, or Have you tried Kodalith film for dropping out gray values? or recently They are developing new computer printers with waterproof archival quality inks. When he did photography for my books, he always generously instructed me in lighting, depth of field in focusing, or film types along the way.

Thanks also to photographer Gunnar George who hired me at age 16 to work in his portrait studio to tint photographs and let me experiment in the darkroom, exploring the mysteries of creating photographs.

Thanks to relatives and friends who served as models for pictures shown. Thanks to creative artists who allowed their works to be shown in the book. Thanks to the folks at Krause who made this book a reality.

For Egg, Vigiletti freed the fragile emulsion from a Polaroid photo and gently transferred it to the surface of an egg.

Since the invention of photography by Louis Daguerre in 1839, artists and laypeople have toiled to find an appropriate use for this modern visual medium. We have discovered that photography has extremely widespread, useful applications. It is used effectively in advertising, documenting people, places and events, reporting news, and more. Although somewhat controversial, I feel safe in saying that photography has finally been accepted as fine art, that is: self-expression unto itself. Furthermore, photography can be employed in conjunction with other established art forms, craft forms, and todays electronic media. It is with these last three mentioned applications of photography that this book is so richly involved.

Carolyn Vosburg Hall, artist and author of twelve successful books on arts and crafts, presents information in a manner that stimulates creativity through projects that are doable by anyone who is willing to try. She introduces several techniques that combine photography with other art and craft media as well as techniques to manipulate the photographic image itself. There are simple projects that make it easy for the novice to get started, as well as more complicated projects for those who like greater challenges. In any case, the information is clearly presented and directed toward the pleasure one gets from the accomplishment of a creative project.

Vigiletti is the founder of the Photography Department at Center
for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. He also served as
department chairman and interim dean of academic affairs.

Introduction

What can you make with photos?

A mirror with a memory is what people called those first magical photographs in the mid 1800s. Before the invention of the camera which led to the photocopier, computer, scanner, digital camera, camcorder, and moreyou had to spend hours drawing or painting to save a scene. Now theres easy access to many ways to create, collect, and save photo imagery to use in making art and craft objects.
