    Acknowledgments
    FROM SOPHIE

Thank you to Andrea, Cayla, Evan, Holly, Iris, Isa, James, Jenny, Katarina, Maria, Mary Kate, Merit, and their parents for making it possible for them to join the fun. Thank you also to the adults who helped us outJim the photographer and all the kid wranglers, Gini, Judy, Kathy, Louise, Sharon, Vaishali, and Yvonne. Special thanks to our cat, Mies, for being a great model.

    FROM BILL AND WEEKS

Thanks to all of the folks at C&T, especially Cynthia, Carolyn, Kristy, Zinnia, Alice, Sue, Gailen, and Amy.

We also thank all the kids and their parents, who were generous in making sure that they were where they needed to be, appropriately dressed, neatly groomed, and well rested. We are especially grateful to Mary Kate and Yvonne for making the simple variation of the Cuddle Fleece Throw (). While we worked on this book, our dependable interns, Vaishali Chudi, Cindy Dapogny, and Vanessa Vanderzee, helped keep the studio running and the orders filled. We feel very fortunate to have such a great team of hard workers. Our kid wranglers were essential to keeping the kids on track, making sure they were having fun, and guiding them in their sewing. Thank you to Judy Chaffee, Kathy Durochik, Louise Gates, Yvonne Malone, Sharon Quintenz, and Gini Williams, who have cheered us on so faithfully for more than a decade.

We feel so fortunate that professional photographer Jim White makes time in his schedule to do photography for our books and magazine. We have done many, many photo shoots with Jim, but having him work on this book was especially meaningful for us. Jim has known Sophie since she was three, has been her soccer coach at times, and is the dad of one of her closest friends (who is also one of our kid models). As a dad, Jim was so great with all of the kids, putting them at ease and understanding how uncomfortable it is to be smiling in 103F heat. We could never have gotten such wonderful shots without him.

Thanks in advance to all of the patient adults who will help kids make projects from this book and will pass on a love of sewing.

Weeks Dye Works (no relation to author Weeks Ringle) generously supplied the wool and embroidery floss for Backpack Decorations ().

Thanks also to the Bilyk family and the Oak Park Public Library for letting us shoot on their premises.

    HELLO FROM SOPHIE

Hi My name is Sophie and I am eleven I started playing with fabric and - photo 2

Hi! My name is Sophie, and I am eleven. I started playing with fabric and sewing when I was three. Lately Ive been learning more about sewing. With help from my family and friends, Ive been making a lot of projects. I want to share with you what I learned.

In this book you will learn the basic skills you need for sewing. If sewing interests you, you will learn more skills with every project you make.

Throughout the book, you will see special notes from me. These give you tips about the projects and help you with the hard parts from a kids point of view. For example: One hard part about sewing any project is that you have to make sure the fabric is not slipping around. So dont sew too fast!

I had a lot of fun picking fabrics, making the projects, and seeing them finished. My favorite part about fabric is the many different designs and colors. Everyone can find something they like to use. The project I enjoyed most was Backpack Decorations. Which one do you think you will like best? My favorite colors are pink, purple, red, and yellow. When I go shopping I like to get florals, paisleys, and other patterned fabrics in those colors. What are your favorite colors and types of fabric? When I finish a project, I am satisfied because it is done and I can use it. I hope you will be proud and satisfied with your projects, too.
