This book, like the bakery, is dedicated to Elizabeth Betty Hinton, an old-school domestic goddess, and to the women whose stories Grandmom Betty made come to life during afternoons spent in her kitchen on Frazier Street.
Together we would like to thank:
Alison Fargis, our agent, without whom this project would have never taken shape and would have stalled on several occasions. Alison is an extraordinary businesswoman who is both affable and unflappable under all circumstances. Justin Schwartz, our editor at Wiley, especially for having the patience to deal with two authors who were emotionally attached to the work and one of whom was also pregnant. We hope you are as happy with the end result as we are. Nicole Paloux, owner of Red Balloon Public Relations, who cheerleaded this project all along the way and introduced us to the wonderfully talented Alison Conklin who photographed the beautiful pictures in this book. Amy Elise Wilson who scouted and styled the most perfect vintage props. Dina Santorelli who edited our personal remembrances with care and at lightning speed. Vanessa Seder who edited our family and bakery recipes. Alicia Nathanson and Adam Suchecki of Blossom Productions who filmed our book trailer. Our hardworking team of bakers, Kevin Murchison, Sarah Schriver and Danielle Ramirez, who keep the bakerys cases stocked daily and who also made the cakes and cupcakes for this book. Our former head decorator, Tessa Brookes Taylor, who poured herself into decorating every single day, and deserves special kudos for frosting the cakes and cupcakes in this book and styling them for the shoot. The family members who helped fill in the holes in our memories Aunt Jean, Uncle Buster, Cousins Crystal, Felice, Mary Frances, Karen and Walter. Last, but not least, the Brown Betty customers who have continued to keep our little shops bustling for eight years. We are overflowing with gratitude and humility for the love you have shown our bakeries.
Norrinda would like to give a big thank you to: my dad, Norman, for believing in and supporting every crazy idea that I have ever had including, but not limited to, opening Brown Betty. My sister, Norrina, for being the voice of reason whenever one of those ideas gets too wild and for keeping everything on track. My grandparents, Leon and Elizabeth Hinton and Sallie Marie Renfroe, for being role models on the virtues of hard work, good citizenship and fine character. I keep striving to be like them. My bestiesBrandi, Deborah, Jonelle, Khalilah, Lesley, and Maygen who supported Brown Betty in every way possible before we could afford employees and ever since. These sister friends did whatever needed be done for the cause from baking and frosting, to decorating the stores, to reviewing contracts and working the register. My dream catcher, best friend, and husband, Fareed, who has delivered cakes with me up and down the east coast, sat in the bakery for hours on end while I frosted cupcakes and took meetings and who has sacrificed as many days and nights for Brown Betty as I have. You dream big and inspire me to do the same. Kingston, you are the biggest dream your dad helped me catch. Finally, I would like to thank my mom and partner, Linda, for being the backbone of this bakery and joining me on this journey. You are the hardest working person I know and it has been one of the great pleasures of my life to help share your baking genius with the masses.
Linda would like to thank: Brown Bettys very first taste testers, Crystal, Al, and Bashan, for letting me try my recipes out on them the entire summer before we officially opened the bakery. My best friends forever, Esther Arnette and Charmaine Morton, for always being just a phone call away when I needed help with any aspect of Brown Betty. My parents, Leon and Betty Hinton, for passing their love of family, friends, and delicious baking on to the next generation. My daughters, Norrinda and Norrina, for making me a very proud mother. Their unique styles, creativity, and professionalism have led to the success of Brown Betty.
