Old Baldy Lighthouse at dawn.

The first time I visited North Carolina, something changed in me; that first family vacation to the Outer Banks was eye opening. Sometime after dawn I woke and knew we were close to the beach: I could smell it. The salt-rich air told me something different was up ahead; mountains had been flattened into the coastal plain and wide reaches of marsh and sound agreedthe world was different here.

It wasnt until I was an adult living on North Carolinas coast that I started keeping tabs on the things that call people to this place and the things that hold them here.

Pelicans, wingtips skimming the waves, climbing then performing a twisting dive as they plunge into the water to feed. Evening light golden on the full, heavy heads of sea oats. The moon rising out of the slow arc of the horizon, its reflection long and pale on the water. That same water in the darkest of night, still and scattered with reflected stars.

boats on Cape Fear

The hypnotic rhythm of the waves running up the shore and the even more hypnotic sound of water on a boats hull. Gulls calling and laughing in summer, crickets ringing in the evening, the sound of the still marsh burbling to life as the tide rises. The wind rushing by the top of the lighthouse where we grip the catwalk rail with white knuckles and laugh at how far we can see.

The way salt dries on your skin, and how you can feel the heat of the day emanating from summer sand. The pull of ocean current, the tug of a fish on the line.

Its these things that beckon us to the coast, that ask us to come, explore, play, stay in North Carolina.

Where to Go
The Outer Banks

This thin strip of islands is a wealth of ecological wonders, cultural traditions as old as the colony, and enduring, and unsolved, historical mysteries. Surfers, kiteboarders, and hang gliders ride the waves and wind around Nags Head and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. On Roanoke Island, one of the first English settlements appeared then disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Pirates and privateers plied these waters, and Blackbeard lost his head near Ocracoke. The vast Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds are home to colonial towns and fishing villages centuries old. Inland, The Great Dismal Swamp, an eerie, unforgettable place, and the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge are home to twisting marsh creeks and arrow-straight, hand-dug canals perfect for kayaking and spotting the rare red wolf. Generations of families have called the rivers and sounds of the Inner Banks home, farming the land and fishing the waters decade after decade. Along the Roanoke River are mill towns, fishing villages, and the colonial crossroads river town of Halifax, birthplace of the documents that inspired the Declaration of Independence.

Beaufort and the Crystal Coast

The architecture of New Bern and Beaufort, two of North Carolinas most important colonial cities, are among the finest in the south, and their waterfronts are lined with stunning homes dating back to the states earliest days. Scuba divers flock to Morehead City so they can head out into crystal-clear waters of The Graveyard of the Atlantic to explore the hundreds of wrecks that dot the North Carolina coast. At the southern tip of the Cape Lookout National Seashore, the Cape Lookout Lighthouse stands sentinel over the waters, shoals, and wrecks, keeping safe the ships that pass. Along that seashore, the ghosts in the abandoned town of Portsmouth, wild horses known as Banker Ponies, and hundreds of migratory birds are the only denizens. The dread pirates Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet, both regulars in these parts, rubbed elbows with high society here by night, and by day prowled the waters looking for prey. And all along the Crystal Coast, the fishing is fine as hundreds of species call the oceans, sounds, river, and creeks home.
