Dedication
I would like to dedicate this book to our current horse friends Starlight, Squire Horse, Nelly, Epona, Poey, Win Ticket, Chance and Brenna, as well as to our equine friends who have passed on: Smoky, Moonlight and Shammar. They have taught me a great deal about horses, and I have enjoyed their company, getting to know them as individual personalities.
Acknowledgments
I'd like to thank all of the horses who are the subjects of the artwork in this book. I would also like to thank the owners and caretakers of these horses, including Bedford Farm, Jane Brooks, Penny Tweedy Chenery, the Dunham family, Nancy Eaton, Elmhurst Farm, Glen Ridge Farm, Pat Goodmann, Hamburg Place, Indian Valley Farm, the Kentucky Equine Humane Center, the Kentucky Horse Park, the Louisville Zoo, Millford Farm, Mrs. Doug Scheumann, Anita Spreitzer, Summerhill Farm, Karen and Mickey Taylor, Three Chimneys Farm, Winifred Madden Morriss, Waterford Farm, Windmill Farm, the World Famous Lipizzaner Stallions, and all the other owners and farms whose names I don't know, but whose equines I saw during my travels and captured as references for drawings and paintings.
About the Author
Jeanne's work has appeared in many exhibitions, including the Society of Animal Artists, Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, National Wildlife Art Show, Masterworks in Miniature, NatureWorks, Nature Interpreted (Cincinnati Zoo), American Academy of Equine Art, the Kentucky Horse Park and the Brookfield Zoo. Several of her paintings are published as limited edition prints, a number of which are sold out.
Jeanne's paintings are published on greeting cards by Leanin' Tree, and she has been featured on the covers and in articles of magazines such as Equine Images, Wildlife Art, Inform Art, Chronicle of the Horse and Hastfocus, a Swedish horse magazine. She is the author of the books Painting Animal Friends, Painting More Animal Friends and Wildlife Painting Basics: Small Animals. In addition, her work has been included in the books The Best of Wildlife Art, Keys to Painting: Fur & Feathers, Painter's Quick Reference: Cats & Dogs, Discovering Drawing and The Day of the Dinosaur, which was later re-released as The Natural History of the Dinosaur.
She is a member of the Society of Animal Artists and Artists for Conservation (formerly known as the Worldwide Nature Artists Group).
Jeanne and her family live on a farm in Washington County, Kentucky, surrounded by woods, fields and the Beech Fork River. They have eight horses, including Squire Horse and Nelly (Belgian draft horses), Starlight (paint), Epona (pony), Poey (Arabian), Win Ticket (Thoroughbred), Chance (grade) and Brenna (Icelandic pony). She adopted the latter three from the Kentucky Equine Humane Center.
Jeanne, her husband Tim and son Nathaniel often help animals in need, and almost all of their animals were rescued. Their animal family also includes ten dogs, twelve cats, a turtle, two rats, several cows and a mouse. In addition, many wild creatures enjoy the sanctuary of the farm, including opossums, deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, box turtles, squirrels, woodchucks, rabbits, snakes, skinks, crows, owls, hawks, songbirds and buzzards.
See more of Jeanne's work on her website at www.jfsstudio.com and at www.natureartists.com.

Artist's Statement
I have always used art to understand and appreciate the natural world and to bring myself closer to my subjects, primarily animals and their surroundings. Animals are not simply generic classes of creatures. Each is an individual, with distinct characteristics unique to that single animal.
