In one respect at least the Potlatch Lumber Company was from its inception quite different from the others.... There was an atmosphere of importance and superiority about it, a sort of grandiosity that at times seemed to annoy father.... It enjoyed its full share of... publicity.

Acknowledgments
At a bend in the Palouse River, two miles off U.S. Highway 95, in the shadow of Gold Hill, in northern Latah County, Idaho, rests a town named Potlatch. It is not a particularly picturesque place. Instead, it projects an image of gritty working-class living.
I do not remember my initial impression of Potlatch. It is a town, Like many others, that does not leave lasting impressions upon passersby. I am sure, when I first viewed it, that the thought never occurred to me that I would someday spend the better part of a decade researching its history. But now I have, and this book is the result. It is the story of a place that was unusual a town completely owned by a large lumber company. But I was more drawn to the study because of what Potlatch has in common with much of the West. For the story of Potlatch is the tale of the exploitation of natural resources; of the impact of big business upon the development of a rural area; of ordinary people making a place their home.
Over the years I have incurred many debts, and I am pleased to recognize those who have helped on this project. First of all, I must thank my colleague in research and the Director of the Latah County Historical Society, Mary Reed. She assisted me on numerous research trips and read every word in this manuscript, helping with major stylistic and substantive revisions, I cannot imagine that this could have been written without her expertise, even if she did not also happen to be my wife. Thomas R. Cox of San Diego State University and Louie Attebery of the College of Idaho also reviewed the entire manuscript, and I am grateful for their numerous helpful comments and ideas for further study. Frederic Johnson of the University of Idaho and Lee Gale of Potlatch reviewed parts of the manuscript, and the final version is much improved because of their assistance.
