Foreword
by Wayne Franklin
Wood is so common a material that, like a picture frame, it may elude our eye even as it shapes our vision. In America, where great forests pandered to the wood-starved carpenters of Europe, wood was for long the refrain in our material existence. In many ways, even in this plastic age it lingers as the stuff of much ordinary life, so much so that plastic often pays it the compliment of imitation. From the beginning, it has sheltered the people and the animals; with modest additions of iron it worked the land and brought in and then housed the harvest; it heated the food on the hearth, supplied the trenchers that held the food as it was eaten, often with wooden utensils, while the weary gathered on wooden benches at their wooden table. Today it serves fewer of these purposes, shelter and furniture primarily. But these remain large uses that demand large quantities of the raw material. The felling, aging, cutting, and shipping of so great an amount of so bulky a commodity remain an important part of America's extractive industries. Here is a story that embraces the whole vast continent. At its center lies that nexus of cultural tradition, material opportunity, and spatial organization that is, in many ways, the story of the land itself.
