Migration in World History

This fully revised and updated second edition of Migration in World History traces the connections among regions brought about by the movement of people, diseases, crops, technology, and ideas.

Drawing on examples from a wide range of geographical regions and thematic areas, noted world historian Patrick Manning guides the reader through:

  • the earliest human migrations, including the earliest hominids, their development and spread, and the controversy surrounding the rise of Homo sapiens
  • the rise and spread of major language groups (illustrated with original maps)
  • an examination of civilizations, farmers, and pastoralists from 3000 BCE to 500 CE
  • trade patterns including the early Silk Road and maritime trade in the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean
  • the effect of migration on empire and industry between 1700 and 1900
  • the resurgence of migration in the later twentieth century, including movement to cities, refugees, and diasporas
  • the various leading theories and debates surrounding the subject of migration.

Patrick Manning is Andrew W. Mellon Professor of World History at the University of Pittsburgh, where he is Director of the World History Center and Director of the Center for Historical Information and Analysis. He is the author of The African Diaspora: A History through Culture (2009) and Navigating World History: Historians Create a Global Past (2003). His research includes African population and migration, 16501950, and an interdisciplinary history of early humanity.

Themes in World History

Series editor : Peter N. Stearns

The Themes in World History series offers focused treatment of a range of human experiences and institutions in the world history context. The purpose is to provide serious, if brief, discussions of important topics as additions to textbook coverage and document collections. The treatments will allow students to probe particular facets of the human story in greater depth than textbook coverage allows, and to gain a fuller sense of historians analytical methods and debates in the process. Each topic is handled over time allowing discussions of changes and continuities. Each topic is assessed in terms of a range of different societies and religions allowing comparisons of relevant similarities and differences. Each book in the series helps readers deal with world history in action, evaluating global contexts as they work through some of the key components of human society and human life.

This concise summary of human migration portrays migratory movement as a human habit and as a thread running through the full extent of our history as a species. The book attempts to sustain a single framework, based on migration, for all of human history. The framework I have selected emphasizes identifying human language communities over time, and tracing patterns of cross-community migration linking language groups.

rely significantly on an earlier publication, Migration in Modern World History, 15002000 , a CD-ROM of which I was principal author. These chapters underscore the importance of migration in many aspects of modern world history, and set modern migrations in the context of the full history of human migrations.

The Annenberg/CPB Project provided the support enabling the World History Center at Northeastern University to produce Migration in Modern World History, 15002000 (Wadsworth, 2000), which laid the groundwork for the present volume. I wish to thank Wadsworth Publishing and especially its publisher, Clark Baxter, for permission to present revised versions of the Migration CD in these pages. In addition I wish to thank series editor Peter Stearns for suggesting that this volume be written, Lisa Jeanne Graf for her skillful work in creating the maps, Christopher Ehret for his years of counsel on the interpretation of historical linguistics, and the history graduate students at Northeastern University for their commentary on draft versions of the manuscript. The late Joseph H. Greenberg carried on a lifelong campaign of analysis of the classification of languages, and produced an astonishing catalogue of results. The first half of this book presents an introductory explication of some of the historical implications of his linguistic analysis. There is much more to be drawn from his works. I dedicate this work to the memory of Joseph H. Greenberg.
