About Your Safety: Working with wood is inherently dangerous. Using hand or power tools improperly or ignoring safety practices can lead to permanent injury or even death. Dont try to perform operations you learn about here (or elsewhere) unless youre certain they are safe for you. If something about an operation doesnt feel right, dont do it. Look for another way. We want you to enjoy the craft, so please keep safety foremost in your mind whenever youre in the shop.

To Tage Frid (1915-2004), whose teaching and writing helped generations of woodworkers learn the craft.

Acknowledgments

B ack in 1998 our publisher suggested that we consider revising Tage Frid Teaches Woodworking. On second look, we discovered just how pertinent both the information and the format remain. Ultimately, we decided that Frids classic reference should be allowed to endure as is.

Instead, we started afresh and began to create The Complete Illustrated Guides series. Lonnie Bird, Andy Rae, and Gary Rogowski had more than seventy-five years of experience among them as professional woodworkers, teachers and authors, but they hardly knew what they were getting into when we met together in Newtown, Connecticut, in January of 1999. Not only did they write over 1,000 pages for Joinery, Shaping Wood, and Furniture and Cabinet Construction, they took over 3,000 photographs and contributed hundreds of drawings to illustrate the first three books.

Next, we turned to toolmaker Thomas Lie-Nielsen to author Sharpening, and chose finishing and refinishing expert Jeff Jewitt to write Finishing. Jeffs wife, Susan Lawson Jewitt, contributed the photographs for his book. Scott Gibson ably edited and took the photography for Sharpening. Tony OMalley edited Lonnie Birds Using Woodworking Tools, while Paul Anthony served as developmental editor for Finishing and Andy Raes Working Wood.

Meanwhile, at The Taunton Press, Paula Schlosser and Jennifer Renjilian worked with me to develop the visual concept and finding devices in the books. Rosalind Wanke managed the design and layout of thousands of pages. Jenny Peters coordinated acres of manuscript and, with Wendy Mijal, scores of photo CDs and cartons of 35 mm slides.

Its been a real privilege to work with so many knowledgeable and creative individuals in publishing The Complete Illustrated Guides. Special thanks to publisher Jim Childs for being willing to take on the risk of this enormous project and to our finance manager, Kathy Worth, who bluntly told me that I was crazy, but that it was a good idea anyway.
