INTRODUCTION
Black and white is the heritage of photography. Until the middle of the twentieth century it was the only way to create a photographic image any colouring that was done was put on by hand. Its images have a special quality. There is a beauty when it is used in still life or landscape, yet it gives an authoritative strength to portraits and documentary work.
Producing black-and-white images from film is an easier process than many might think. It is always rewarding though it may take a lifetime to master. Nothing ever betters the experience of watching a black-and-white picture gradually appear in the developing tray under the darkroom safelights. It is a magic you have to repeat. Many people learned their photography through simple manual cameras and home-processed black-and-white images. For them, this book can answer all the questions about pushing the film-based art forward into the digital era.

Street photography with wide-angle lenses, black-and-white film and quick reflexes has a long tradition modern digital cameras with black-and-white modes let you explore the genre.
A generation of readers will have no direct experience of film-based black-and-white photography, though it is still taught in some schools and colleges. Certain educational institutions are now re-establishing traditional wet darkrooms for black and white because of demands from the digital generation to explore the craft basis of black-and-white photography. On the computer, black and white is an easy option but experience has shown that getting quality fine-art, digital black and white is as hard, if not harder, than mastering the traditional darkroom arts. There are certainly more variables to juggle and things that can go wrong.
