On Midori
Theres a certain freedom that comes with being known as a writer of fiction. The most obvious perk is the ability to step away from my stories or characters and remind people, it aint real these are just figments of my imagination. This excuses me from the weight of the biographer or historian who must have facts and numbers and research behind them. I get to be inaccurate, mistaken, I get to exaggerate, dilute, even create characters and situations which seem wildly surreal, or difficult to believe. Hey, its just my fantasies!
And then, one day, someone said, I love how you captured Midori in the character of Ken Mandarin.
I said, quite memorably, Who?
Maybe it was the few years I spent out of the greater scene, writing books, investigating religion, going through community detox... I admit I somehow missed ever actually meeting Midori until 1999. And I was somewhat perplexed by two things. For one, Ken Mandarin is, to put it bluntly, one of my less realistic creations, a Eurasian heiress, an unapologetic hedonist, a multi-lingual sexual chameleon in fabulous clothing who is equally at home among millionaires and we mundane working class pervs. And secondly, I kept hearing from more people who agreed Ken Mandarin was a great depiction of Midori!
When more than two people in the scene agree on something like that, you know theres a certain surreality to the situation. Imagine my surprise when I finally did meet the real life Midori in Atlanta, I think and one of the first things we did was have a laugh at the people who were so mistaken. As either of us could tell you, Midori is part Japanese. Ken Mandarin, the fictional character, is part Chinese.
Sheesh, thats a world of difference!
However, the unapologetic hedonist at home in the world, who wears stunning fetish couture? OK, that part does seem to match. Now, if only someone would make Midori an heiress...maybe shed share it with me.But in the mean time, I enjoy her company, her wit, her sheer sexiness and of course, her wise advice, tempered with good humor and realism and flavored with skillful touch of sheer romance.
Midori is a refreshing and needed voice to the alternative sexuality community- unashamed and joyful, funny and ironic, honest and pragmatic. And then, when you least expect it, shell hit you upside the head with a stirring description of a fetish, a scene or sexual encounter, and you realize, she really loves this. She has a hard-on for all this stuff - the clothing, the rituals, the pleasures and the agonies. And like any lover, she knows the realistic limitations of the SM/leather/kink scene.
For me, the fiction writer, that makes all the difference in the world. Anyone can make up stories, layer lies over truth; Im proof of that. It takes a romantic realist to make the truth exciting, dangerous, sexy, thrilling, lusty. And luckily, we have one, for real. Purchase her, read her, nod and learn and smile. Then impress your friends by knowing truth from fiction. Or, impress your next date. Midori would approve.

Thank you to all the wonderful sexual adventurers, erotic pioneers and pleasure seekers who came before me. Without you, this would be a really boring and joyless world.
There are many wonderful people who encouraged me in thinking and writing about wickedly fun sex. My editor, Linda Santiman from Daedalus Publishing deserves special thanks for her encouragement, patience, and creative reminders and for the general ass kicking she did to get me to finish this book. Thanks to the proof readers who helped me polish the book and smooth out the material, Andrea Zanin, Alaska Roy, Maraina and Gregg.
My gratitude goes to all those who in the past have encouraged me to write. Without you, this book wouldnt exist: Layne Winklebleck, Kat Sunlove and Dara of Spectator magazine. Tony Mitchell and Tim Woodward of Skin Two magazine. Diana Cage of On Our Backs magazine. The unsinkable and ever funny Ernest Greene and Ira Levine. Dr. William Henkin for his wisdom and insights. Cecilia Tan of Circlet Press who endures my slow writing and strange humor. Janet Hardy of Greenery Press for taking a chance on me. Phil F for being my sounding board on so many of these essays.
I am indebted to those in my life and communities that have taught and influenced me. First, to all the men and women of the leather community who have died of HIV/AIDS/HRC. You shouldnt have died so young. I miss you all. And now for the living... my teachers.... Dr. Carol Queen and Dr. Robert Lawrence for their seductive ways. Dr. Annie Sprinkle for her joyous energy. Laura Antoniou and Karen Tayler, dear friends and two of the funniest storytellers I know. Joseph Bean the twinkle in his eyes makes me giggle. Kim Airs of Grand Opening Boutique whos the big sister that every one wishes they could have. Karen Mendalson for getting me started on this whole kink teaching path. Michael Manning for so much erotic inspiration.
My sincere appreciation to the Leather Archive and Museum for keeping our history and memory alive. Thanks to the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom for their work to promote the individuals right to sexual self-determination.
Lastly to my family... my mother and grandmother. They did not merely set the example, they were the example, providing the leadership I needed to live life honestly and to follow a passion, even on the roads less traveled.
Most importantly my beloved partner, Kelly. Without your love, patience and devotion, I would not be so happy and fulfilled in life.
Midori, May, 2005
I love sex. I love to do it. I love to look at it. I love to talk about it. I love to think about it and I love to write about it. Ive been writing about sex for so long now that, honestly, I had forgotten about how I got started until I started editing this book and tried to remember where it all began. But heres the story... I was in my mid 20s. At that time, I wasnt enmeshed with any of the organized kink communities, but I was an eager visitor to many sectors of the San Francisco sexual underground. San Francisco Sex Information, a free sexual information hotline and resource center, had given me some of the most innovative and thorough human sexuality education available at 60+ hours of education, I had been exposed to thirty times more sex educator training then most newly-minted physicians. This training and my desire to make something of that knowledge landed me a job with a very large sex toy mail-order company. As one of my work duties I started writing pithy little sex advice columns in the intra-company filled with product info and merchandise sales tips for the sales people. They werent meant for the general public, but intended as little throwaway pieces for a tiny, closed-list group. Little did I know that fifteen years later, Id be traveling the world teaching classes in adventurous sex, and writing about the many things Ive learned... and about my own personal journeys as well.
