Stepping onto a brand-new path is difficult, but not more difficult than remaining in a situation which is not nurturing to the whole woman.

Grumpy. That was my nickname as a kid. I earned it by being the type of sulky girl who always expected the worst. I remember thinking my mom would for sure be late picking me up. Or that whatever game was starting would for sure be boring and Id lose. In the third grade, when my family started planning a trip to Disney World, I didnt want to go. Really. Why would I? There would inevitably be long lines and it would be hot, and no thank you lets just stay home. In the fifth grade, when my class wrote and performed a play called The Key to Understanding, I created a character in my own likeness: Neggy, the embodiment of negativity. At some point after that my parents gave me a necklace with a gold charm of Grumpy, the dwarf from Snow White, standing in all his grouchy glory, arms crossed, mouth turned down. I wore it or just a matching sourpuss until my late teens.

Now in my forties, I still have that necklace, but its as if it belongs to someone else. In a way, it does. Over the last twenty years or so, Ive been called a lot of thingsnever ever grumpy. These days, my friends joke that I fart rainbows. The necklaces I wear have charms of lightning boltsa symbol of energy I adopted a few years ago as my own personal logoand say words like yay. The rest of my wardrobe is best described as extroverted; I love bright colors and emoji-esque patterns because they make me and others smile and they spark conversations.

When it comes to chitchat, I dont just talk about what I find interesting or cool, I tend to
