Preface

3GPP recently completed its Release 16 in June 2020 which is a key milestone for the specification of an initial full 5G system. It has also started the discussion for Release 17 and the planning for Release 18. As a new generation of cellular technology typically appears every 810 years, 6G can be expected around 2030. A few organizations, companies, universities, and countries have already started the initial research of 6G. The FCC has taken the first step of opening up terahertz wave spectrum (frequencies between 95 GHz and 3 THz), citing that it will expedite the deployment of new services in the spectrum above 95 GHz. In early 2018, the University of Oulu in Finland announced the funding of their 6G Flagship program to research materials, antennas, software, and more that could play a role in the launch of 6G. The idea is to explore use cases for which 5G may not be sufficient and then develop algorithms, protocols, and hardware to enable such use cases. 6G could offer high-fidelity holograms, multisensory communications, Terahertz (THz) communications, and pervasive artificial intelligence. The overarching aim of this book is to explore the evolution from 5G towards 6G from a service, air interface, and network perspective, as well as to take a crystal ball perspective on what the future with 6G may look like.

This book lays out a vision for 6G and discusses key research directions towards sustainable development goals and societal challenges while creating true productivity through radically new technological enablers of 6G mobile wireless networks. This book not only shows the potential 6G use cases, requirements, metrics, and enabling technologies but also discusses the emerging technologies and topics such as 6G PHY technologies, reconfigurable intelligent surface, millimeter-wave/THz links, visible light communications, transport layer for Tbit/s communications, high-capacity backhaul connectivity, cloud nativeness, machine-type communications, edge intelligence and pervasive AI, network security and blockchain, and the role of open-source platform in 6G. The state-of-the-art research results, methods, and information on these emerging technologies are of particular interest. How emerging technologies can contribute to making the vision of 6G a reality is also an important aspect to be discussed in this book.

This book provides a more systematic view on these emerging technologies towards 6G in support of a wider variety of verticals. In addition, it presents the expected applications with the requirements and the possible technologies for 6G communications. This book also outlines the possible challenges and research directions to facilitate the future research and development of 6G mobile wireless networks.

This is the worlds first book on 6G Mobile Wireless Networks that aims to cover a comprehensive understanding of key drivers, use cases, research requirements, challenges, and open issues for 6G from researchers across the globe. In this book, we have invited world experts in this area, including company representatives, academic researchers, and other builders and members of communication society to contribute the chapters. This book covers the following topics:
  • 6G Use Cases, Requirements, Metrics, and Enabling Technologies

  • PHY Technologies for 6G Wireless

  • Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface for 6G Wireless Networks
